"Self played a little bit at guard last year. We moved him out to tackle," Collins said. Freshman Bryce Bradley starts at the other guard. "We got some guys behind them who are f ighting and clawing and pushing to try earn that spot which is really making everybody better," Collins said. "It's a much better situ- ation than we were in last year line- wise because we finally got a little bit of depth there." DEFENSE Defensive Line Good-sized freshman Dallas Harri- man and eighth grader Bryson Sams play ends with Austin Cagle at nose guard. "Austin Cagle's got an impressive motor for his size, hopefully hold down the middle of the defensive line," Collins said. "Right now we're in a really fortunate position that none of them play offensive line," Collins said. Linebackers Martinez started every game last year at middle linebacker and will again this season. "He's got a little bit of help this year so if he gets too tired, he can get a break on offense or we've got kids behind him on defense this year that will be able to play," Collins said. Price and Jones play outside line- backer with several kids expected to see action at the spur linebacker including: Kase Ingram, Trace Wallace and Chris West. "Hopefully, one will develop to kind of take over that spot, but right now it's on a rotation," Collins said. "It's nice in practice to have a backup. One makes a mistake, you pull him out, you talk to him about it, you send him in again and they're getting a lot of reps." Secondary Returning starters Birkes and Price play cornerback with Brewer at free safety. SPECIAL TEAMS Progress occurred with the special teams units last week. According to Collins the junior Wolves are getting pretty confident in kickoffs and ran a kickoff return a few times working on blocking assignments. "Catching the football is the first thing for us. One of our goals on special teams is to catch every kick that's kicked to us — because you're going to give up yardage for free if you don't catch it," Collins said. CONFERENCE T h i s y e a r t h e j u n i o r Wo l v e s compete in the 3A-1 for the first time since the 2011 season. Collins hasn't had much experience playing any of the conference opponents, but he isn't taking them lightly. "I know there is some teams that are going to put up a heckuva fight and we're going to get everything from Cedarville's Wing-T look to Charles- ton's spread look and maybe a little taste of everything in between those two so it's going to be a challenge teaching the kids this is how we play this week, and this is how we line up this week and this is what this team wants to do," Collins said. "I think the focus is going to be, 'this is what we do on defense and here's how we play,' instead of trying to adjust every week and change the defense totally. Teach the kids, 'this is your job and this is what you're taking care of.' Hopefully, we'll play a little faster and not be so worried about changing how they line up every week." 10C Enterprise-Leader Wednesday, August 26, 2020 F o o t b a l l P r e v i e w Go TiGers!
