DEFENSE Despite two new teams at the varsity level, defensive coordinator Mason Pinkley said neither Elkins nor Hunts- ville present an unfamiliar team. "We'll get film on them soon. Hunts- ville, they're not new. They've been around a lot and then Elkins we've been playing [at the junior high level], and they're good at that younger age so we've seen what they have," Pinkley said. "Last year, we had a really rainy, nasty game with them, but I think most of their talent moved up the same as us. That may be a fight." Defensive Line Pinkley notes two defensive lineman returning from last season Ethan Groth- aus and Joseph Sims will start. "He's going to be a piece that we can use," Pinkley said of Grothaus, while describing the pair as "Big kids, fast kids," who will anchor the defensive line. "Other than that it's kind of up for grabs," Pinkley said. "We've got a couple of ninth graders and eighth graders that are going to be mixing it up." Linebackers Spencer Allen and David Stephens gained valuable experience last year. "They read really well," Pinkley said. "They read and get to the ball, we just got to work on getting them to finish their tackles." Defensive Backs Pinkley feels good about the secondary with Hubbs returning as a starter capable of playing either safety spot. Luke Vance, who played cornerback in 2019 moves to safety.
