from nose guard to defensive tackle. Boudrey, Hill and Taylor will see minutes on defense. "With our [defensive] linemen, we've got some quality guys. We just got to be smart about how we use them and keep everybody fresh because every- body's going to have to play on both sides of the ball," Adams said. Linebackers Matthews earned 5A West All-Conference as a defensive end last season, but shifts to inside linebacker. "He's going to be a guy who can play both positions for us, and hopefully be a guy who can help us kind of expand our depth," Adams said. Junior Braden Bullington started last year at defensive tackle also moves to linebacker. "He's lost a ton of weight and increased his speed, but he's still very strong and very aggres- sive," Adams said. "I like him at that spot." Sophomore Cooper Gardenhire (5-8, 190) comes forward and delivers a blow and will see action at interior linebacker. All-Conference senior linebacker Hayden Cox (5-11, 190) made 64 tackles in 2019. Senior James Payne (6-2, 185) also earned All-Confer- ence honors as a linebacker with 47 tackles and 6 sacks. Senior Hunter Nass (5-9, 190) and experienced classmate Andrew Wood (5-10, 176) play on the outside. Wood should be available in about a month coming back from a dislocated ankle. Secondary Donovan brings great speed covering the field. Thomas, a three-year starter at cornerback, racked up 44 tackles last season and will occasionally step up as a faster guy at linebacker. Harvey returns as the other starting cornerback. Senior Parker Jones (5-5, 123) is one of the stron- gest guys pound-for-pound had a good fall camp. Josh Cartwright has found a home at cornerback, whom Adams says is probably the best cover guy in man-to-man situations. Pickens, Ian Cartwright and Jay are among eight players with some starting experience in the secondary. OVERVIEW "Defensively we have eight guys back who have starting experience," Adams said. "We have a chance to be a really sound, good defensive football team. We got to get our offense back. We got to get our quarterback situation squared away and we got to get our offensive linemen healed up. Earlier in the year, particularly, defense is going to have to carry us until we can get our offensive guys going."
