MUSIC IN THE DESERT WITH LEE BLACK AND FRIENDS By Jackie Deal When he sings the angels listen. Lee Black prob- ably won't like that introduction but it's true. Lee and some musicians friends have gotten together for ten years or so to put on a variety show. Lee " kinda leads it," he says. "That way I get to make the fi rst mistake." He sings (beautifully) and plays the mandolin. Don't call it a banjo or he'll never forgive you. Linda Alverson, from Maine, is new to the group and she plays the "dog house" bass; it's big enough to house several dogs. She says it's a 1940 bass and is better than the one she got in 2000. Sharon Bowen plays the hammered dulcimer. It has 68 strings, like a pi- ano, stretched out fl at except that the notes travel up and over and maybe down again. It looks impossible to play but she gets sweet music out of it. She says, "I like to play weird stuff in minor keys." Barbara Burnett plays a fi ddle that she got second hand 50 years ago. She trained as a classical violinist and has played for almost 73 years. She's the matriarch of the Burnett family, four generations that sometimes get togeth- er to play in Quartzsite and they are fabulous. Gordon Latter plays piano, guitar and sings. He's from Nordegg, Alberta which explains his accent. In practice he did a beautiful rendition of "Amazing Grace." George Gill plays guitar and sings, frequently in a duet with Lee. He also sang a duet with Barbara, "Sunny Side of Life." Kathleen Cook plays the autoharp and sings in a sweet, pure voice. Some members of the audience are expected to join them. Randy Cardinal with a Johnny Cash bass voice sings alone and with Lee. Cara promises to do her popular "Uni- corn" song. If you've ever wondered why there are no unicorns today, she'll tell you. She always has the audience roaring with laughter with this song and gets uproarious applause. Lee says, "It's not a strictly regiment- ed program. We're just some friends having fun." Each person will sing four or fi ve songs. There'll be country/west- ern, gospel and who knows what? The program will be in the Gold Star Club House January 19 and will start at 6:30, because as Lee says, "We old people like to get to bed early." 928-916-9812 RV ROOF COATING FREE Estimate Very Reasonable! 1YR FREE Service w/Roof Call Bob (Not a licensed contractor) WE ARE BACK for another season!
