M�� 5, 2010 In Memorium Joe Fowler When Billie and Joe came to Quartz- site, they like so many others were “Escapees”. We were all so happy when they decided that they were fin- ished with travelling all the time and made Quartzsite their home. Billie and Joe, along with their friends Margaret and Elmer London and Mike and Judy Nacheff explored the desert, searched for ruins and petroglyphs and partici- pated in the many programs offered about local history. Billie and Joe joined the Friends of the Library and became lifetime mem- bers, they joined the Quartzsite Muse- um and became frequent volunteers. Joe restored a Willys Jeep in which he and Billie explored the desert trails. In the 10 years since he started checking out books at the library, he read nearly a thousand books, from history to sus- pense to thrillers and everything in be- tween. He learned everything he could about Quartzsite and its desert wil- derness and thoroughly appreciated the wonderful place we live in; which made it all that much harder when it was his time to go. Joe’s lungs started to shut down, more each year, as a result of many long years in the construction busi- ness. Each spring he would have a bad flu or pneumonia and it would take more of his vitality away. Joe didn’t like to be idle. He was always donating his time to projects for the community. He saved the library countless dollars by doing maintenance on the library computers, keeping them running much longer than would be expected, given the hard use library computers receive. When it became too difficult for him to continue to volunteer, he was a strong supporter of others who work hard for the community. There were days when it was clear Joe struggled with his frustration over his lack of strength, but when you asked him how he was feeling, he would smile and say, “Like a Child!” He really admired our Police Chief, Jeff Gilbert and tried to attend the Coffee with Cops whenever he was able. There is no easy way to say goodbye to a dear friend, and Joe was that, a friend to many of us and more importantly a friend to the community of Quartz- site. He believed in our Town and in the special place it was and could be. He used to have coffee at McDonald’s when Anne Ingebrigtsen was alive and he looked after her when he could. He always celebrated her birthdays, even if it meant going to Yuma when she was in a nursing facility there. Anne was living history and I think that Joe thought he was too, by listen- ing to her stories. He took with him so much knowledge when he left us, that the only thing left to say was the mira- cle is we met him at all, in this remote and yet sophisticated little town called Quartzsite. I think Joe had a secret that he told everyone, but no one saw it. He’s off on a new adventure, “Like a Child!”, ex- ploring a new horizon. The only thing that will fill the void his passing leaves behind is the knowing that he is no lon- ger frustrated by a body that became too weak to take all the adventures he had planned. Homeland Security routinely monitors all governmental entities websites. The Town has contacted its web hosting pro- vider to track the hacking. In the year 2000 multiple government websites were hacked by a “Red Worm” that effected many sites. This current situation does not appear to be like that. As more information is known it will be released. The Real Story on Councilman Robert Kelley For all the rumors floating around Quartzsite pertain- ing to the recent hospitalization of Councilman Robert Kelley, here is the real scoop.Robert Kelley did NOT have a heart attack, he had a severe case of Lung Infection and Pneumonia. He’s back to work. There is no reason that he can not continue with all the civic duties and the HOA of Q Mountain Vista. So Vote Right & Vote for Honest Bob Kelley There are people in town spreading these rumors are the same ones who want to run our town, but have no vested interest in it, for example property ownership, paying taxes and participating in civic events. Nor are they volunteering to help others. Councilman Kelley is an Honest, straight forward person who has the interest and betterment of Quartzsite as Number 1. If you ask him a question and he does not have the answer, he gets it and gets back to you. He is truthful and will tell you how it goes, not just what you want to hear.
