P 2 DESERT MESSENGER IS A PROUD MEMBER OF D M Desert Messenger goes Year-Round, joins AFCP Desert Messenger DEADLINE for the WED. MAY 19 issue is WED. MAY 12 Send your ads, stories, letters to the editor, events and news desertmessenger7@yahoo.com QUARTZSITE- The Desert Messenger (DM) announces plans to publish dur- ing the summer. The paper will be provide one issue in June, July and August, publishing the fi rst Wednes- day of each month., then returning to the regular schedule: the fi rst and third Wednesday September through May. The Desert Messenger also recently joined the Association of Free Commu- nity Papers(AFCP). AFCP represents publishers of nearly 3,000 free-cir- culation community papers, reaching nearly 45 million homes weekly. “Our affi liation with the AFCP will support us in fi nding new ways to make our publication the best for Quartz- site,” said Shanana “Rain” Golden- Bear, Publisher. AFCP hosts a yearly advertising, edi- torial and marketing awards contest to recognize the “Best of the Best” of the industry’s best use of creative and technical skill during their annual con- ference. Publisher Golden-Bear and Photographer, Starr BearCat attended this year’s conference in Tucson on April 22-24. The beautiful setting at the Westin La Paloma Resort provided a backdrop for continued education, meeting with industry vendors, and sharing of ideas with publishers. •Free Paper Circulation is growing, rather than falling like paid newspa- pers. •Free Papers have total circulation in excess of 100 million copies weekly, more than twice that of all paid papers combined. •Free papers include a diverse mix of publications, from traditional shop- ping guides distributed by carrier and mail to alternative newsweeklies and community newspapers. The Leadership Institute (TLI) is a structured, comprehensive sales and leadership training program designed specifi cally for AFCP members and the free paper industry. “With the added training and input from other publishers, expect some exciting additions to the Desert Mes- senger in the near future,” said Gold- en-Bear. Editorial BY SHANANA “RAIN” GOLDEN-BEAR The person who sends out positive thoughts activates the world around him positively and draws back to himself positive results. -Norman Vincent Peale Shortly after delivering the April 21st issue, I headed to Tucson for my fi rst Association of Free Papers (AFCP) conference. Joining AFCP just the week before, during deadline time, I didn’t have much time to plan or develop many expectations. The conference began with a presentation from Dan Clark, international speaker and primary contributing author to the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. His speech was full of stories, laughter, inspiration, and tears. The day before, as I delivered papers, I received many phone calls from concerned readers and town offi cials regarding alleged stealing of copies of the Desert Messenger. (Evidently someone didn’t like what was printed!) Listening to Mr. Clark and his inspirational words, I was reminded that those things are not as important as the power of bringing people together, whether in the form of this paper or in celebrating our humaness together. “We don’t have problems, we have challenges. You can’t waste a good recession,” said Clark. “ It’s times like these we have to do what’s necessary to succeed, to take it to the next level, to gather together for our common good.” When sharing with the group of publishers, he focused on the impact of small papers within a community, having to be authentic to who we are. The Desert Messenger will continue through adversity, challenges, and will embrace change! “Shift Happens!” even in the free paper industry! So folks, investigate, make decisions based on facts, not just hearsay, but above all, VOTE ON MAY 18th. Take charge and do something powerful in your life, don’t just kick back and wait for it to happen!
