Zeta Chapter of Kappa Delta at the University of Alabama - Spring 2018 The Katydid A FRESH START THIS SPRING New Outdoor Furnishings and Décor to Be Purchased for Chapter House A fter four years of operating a 40,000-square-foot Chapter House with nearly 70 residents and 300 frequent "visitors," the one constant is that we must work hard to maintain and improve the KD house in every practical way. For the spring semester, our primary purchases to enhance the aesthetics and quality of life for our members include: • Four new outdoor patio tables with oversized umbrellas and 16 new chairs, including new seat cushions for the new chairs and all of our existing chairs; • Four new outdoor grills to use during Parents Weekend; and • A new painting and rug for the small dining room. Hopefully, the rug will provide better acoustics for the room. Several sororities outsource their meal offerings to caterers, but we believe in fresh, on-site preparation. To maintain the quality of our food, we have added another cook so that we now have 11 staff members, plus our housemother. We pay a competitive wage and offer each staff member access to health insurance. We continue to study and plan for periodic maintenance to every room and different components of our house. This month, we will meet with other sorority house corporations and several university representatives to develop a budget to cover replacement costs for major components. It is a good time to create a dedicated reserve fund from our general funds to ensure we don't experience any major surprises. You may have heard about another sorority on campus that is considering an addition to their chapter house that was built only a few years ago. They built a slightly smaller house than other chapters did. We, too, considered this option, but instead built the KD House to nearly the maximum 40,000-square-foot size imposed by the University. While we feel that was a good decision, it reinforces the need for us to stay on top of everything. It isn't easy doing so but we will work hard on your behalf so that KD has an illustrious future! Love in AOT, KΔ House Corporation and KΔ Chapter Advisory Board T he lessons learned through the Kappa Delta sisterhood have profound and lasting effects on sisters' lives well after their time in the sorority. This was especially true of Jacqueline "Jacque" Jones Longshore '86, who enjoyed the pleasure of friendship and sisterhood with her Zeta sisters. Jacque was a junior when she was initiated into Kappa Delta. Her mother, Fran Hardwich Jones, Sigma Lambda '63, and her grandmother, Lucile Lewis Jones, Sigma Lambda '34, were overjoyed that Jacque decided to join the sisterhood and continue the family legacy. As a transfer student from Hollins College, Jacque was excited to meet new friends and make impactful friendships that made her remaining years of school even more enjoyable. After graduating in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, Jacque served as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines for nearly 15 years. "She had a winning personality. She made everyone feel special," Fran said. "She thoroughly enjoyed her career and traveling the world." Jacque unexpectedly entered Chapter Eternal on February 7, 2002, at age 36. This unfortunate and tragic loss struck all those who knew her as a loving daughter, wife, mother, sister and friend. Fran fondly remembers her daughter's smile.
