Dedicated to the Men & Women of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Missouri Gamma Chapter and Named in Memory of Our Enthusiastic Brother Wilbert "Beartracks" Burton and his wife Daisy BEARTRACKS Missouri Gamma Chapter Alumni Newsletter S I G M A P H I E P S I L O N Winter 2018 The Best Days of Mo Gamma A bout half of the MO Gamma alumni who will be receiving this printed newsletter do not receive our electronic Beartracks because we do not have their email addresses. Dave Braun is doing an outstanding job as editor of the eBeartracks. If you are not receiving the eBeartracks and you would like to, send me (md_hurst@ yahoo.com) or Dave Braun (dbraun55-beartracks@yahoo. com) your email address and we will get you set up. Highlights from the December eBeartracks: The Alumni Corporation awarded $9,475 in scholarships to the fall semester officers based upon their performance compared to the goals we had set together. Four Chap- ter members were awarded a total of $3,000 in scholar- ships in 2017; those funds coming from three scholarship funds set up by alumni. Generally, these scholarships are awarded based upon need, scholastic performance, con- tribution to the Chapter and impact on the fraternal spirit of the Chapter. The Alumni Board established the following goals at a September planning session: • Lead Alumni on Substance-Free Facilities (SFF) Acceptance • Assist Chapter in Successful SFF Transition • Recruit Additional Alumni Participation • Develop Scholarship Plan • Obtain Chapter Counselor If you are interested in additional information on these items, or want to see the fall eBeartracks, use the follow- ing address: http://bit.ly/2mRTYCX. The Chapter had an excellent fall semester. They are cur- rently in second place in intramurals. Service work via the Chapter's leadership of the campus's Sexual Assault Awareness Week went very well. The Chapter finished the fall semester with the second-highest GPA among all fra- ternities at 3.331. This compares to an all-Greek male av- erage of 3.103. This excellent performance follows a high- est GPA in the spring '17 semester. Way to go, Chapter. Awaking on December 2 and thinking about heading to Rolla for the day for the Chapter's Scholarship Review and Officer Transition Retreat, I thought about calling in sick and skipping the day. I was just not ready to spend another entire day on the Retreat, my 20th. It's amaz- ing what spending a day with an outstanding group of young men can do for you. As Mike Kearney '61, Mike Schmidt '75, Dave Denner '76, Ray Zesch '70, Ed Clausen, MO Alpha '84, and I returned home that eve- ning I noted how glad I was I came and how excited I was with our day. As Mike Kearney has said probably 20 times, "Best day in MO Gamma." Fraternally, Mike Hurst '74, MO Gamma Alumni Board President md_hurst@yahoo.com SigEp won the flag football championship this year! Congratulations to the brothers who dedicated their time and talent to make it happen. Brothers would often play multiple times per week and would have to give up their time to practice on the days that they did not have games. A s the incoming president for Missouri Gamma, I want to update you on how the Chapter is doing and where we are headed this semester. In fall 2017, Missouri Gamma placed first in both softball and flag football intra- murals. This allowed us to finish the semester second overall, barely behind Sigma Nu. Regarding grades, we placed second with a 3.331 GPA. Overall, I believe that fall 2017 was a successful semester and a great motivator to finish even better in spring 2018. We had an outstanding Leadership Day during the fall semester. Leadership Day is an annual event put on by our Epsilon group and primarily targets our new members within the Sigma and Phi Challenges. Epsilon brothers were given the assignment and created a schedule, budget, and set of activi- (Continued on page 2) MO Gamma's GPA Remains Among the Top on Campus After Softball and Football Wins, SigEp Finishes Second Overall
