4B Daily News – Saturday, November 10, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith What's the best argument for believing in God? The Kansas City Star (MCT) GOD'S LOVE IS THE BEST PROOF Pastor Emeritus Raymond Davis Jr., Greater Corinthian Church of the Christ, Kansas City, Mo.: The best argument for believing in God is the central argu- ment of the Scriptures — God's love, especially God's love as spoken about in the New Testament. The Bible's essential premise is stated in the context of God's love for mankind, and God's love is always an act on behalf of the world of mankind. Consider "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son" … "Here- in is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins." (John 3:16 and 1 John 4:10) God gives the believer the advantage through this faith value, and all those who will believe are estab- lished. The believer is persuaded to have faith in God because of what Scripture has to say about those who believe in God. For example, God said to a person in authority that to believe is to be established. To not believe voids one's being established. (Isaiah 7:9) To be established means that no matter the things that are designed to shake or even destroy one's faith will not prosper. Consider "No weapon formed against you shall prosper." (Isaiah 54:17a) Moreover, "All things work together for good to them that love God." (Romans 8:28) Not believing in God is stated in the Psalm 14:1 and Psalm 53:1. AKobayashi Maru for a generation Kobayashi Maru in Star Trek II – the Wrath of Khan. A young officer encounters the no-win scenario in a sim test and fails – as everyone has always done – except for James Tiberius Kirk. When Kirk is asked repeatedly how he beat Kobayashi Maru he finally 'fesses up to re-pro- gramming the computers. Some would say he cheated; he says he created an opportunity by re-creat- ing the rules. We Boomers love our Captain Kirk because he does what we did – creating opportunity by re- creating rules. When they told us living in space Every Boomer remembers the NO SUPREME BEING IN BUDDHISM Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery: From the Buddhist perspective your ques- tion of whether God exists is a moot point. One of the key distinctions of Buddhism from other religions is the lack of any kind of supreme deity who created the uni- verse. Most importantly, the Buddha himself did not consider himself any kind of god, savior or even prophet. He was a merely a mortal human who went on a spiritual search and through his efforts attained enlightenment. beyond the life of our batteries was just science fiction we perfected fuel cells and taught ourselves how to make terrestrial atmosphere aboard a space station. When they told us computers required entire rooms and massive cooling systems we invented micro-chips and the rest of the hardware needed for miniaturization. When they told us only the fictional star trekkers had wireless communicators we invent- ed cell phones and placed our miniaturized computers inside them. And when they told us there were limits to communication and the storage of information we invented the internet. We needed the scientists and engineers of an older generation as much as we needed our own, but it was the heart of the Boomer Generation that said, "Go for it!" and we did. er VonBraun to design multi stage rockets and a Buzz Aldrin to invent the math that understood orbital mechanics well enough to enable space rendezvous, but it took that same younger gener- ation to implement their designs and concepts. It took a generation willing to re-create the rules for the doable to become comfortable with living in space – and to invent the hardware and the software to move beyond the vision of just getting to the moon and back before somebody else did. The lack of the acceptance of a creator may call into question how the world began. From the Buddhist per- spective there is no real starting point for life. In Bud- dhist cosmology, life is seen as a continuous cycle of birth, death and rebirth again. This is happening on a macro level (multiple galactic universes), as well as on the micro level (each of us dies and are reborn again) and this occurs in an unending cycle. All religions have some concept of ultimate reality. For monotheistic religions, it is the concept of God. For Buddhists, ultimate reality is Dharmakaya or the Bud- dha's enlightened mind that is free from the limits of conceptualization and empty of inherent existence. We believe that this mind of enlightenment is available to all of us, because all of us possess "Buddha-nature," the potential for enlightenment. Through meditation practice we clear the clinging, grasping and obscurations of our mind that prevents us from actualizing enlightenment. It took Ronald Reagan to call for and conceive of the Reagan Revolu- tion and Morning in America, but it took a generation to make it hap- pen. It took a generation that refused to believe we were finished as a nation in the wake of defeat in Vietnam and the social and eco- nomic wreckage of Lyndon John- son's Great Society. Through Operation Christmas Child, locals are joining tens of thou- sands of people across the U.S. to fill empty shoe boxes with toys, school would never change the racial climate in the South – and pretended it didn't need changing in the North – we marched and sang and voted and paid no atten- tion to what could not be done. Mostly we hung out with people who were different than the people from our neighborhood and pro- claimed that men are men and women are women whatever they look like and whatever they eat and however they speak – and God intended it that way. When they told us the age of miracles was ancient history we began healing people in the power of God's Spirit on California beaches and when they told us God expected us to wear the right tie and the right dress to church we discovered a God who loved us right where we are and just as we were. I speak of the Jesus People and their Great Awakening. And when we began to take the Gospel of God out to the nations we listened to Him – not to the purveyors of that old time reli- gion – and respected and empow- When they told us we supplies, candy, and necessity items for suffer- ing children around the world. After sharing the Gospel we left them to fig- ure out how best to serve it up to their people. We glo- ried in the fact that we are not the Savior; just His close personal friends. The book says there is no hope for substance abusing addicts beyond a lifetime of meetings, once a person comes out as homosexual there is no going back, and young people will just become more and more promiscu- ous and inclined to abort the babies that result. Our parents and the experts they listened to wrote that book. We Boomers re- wrote the book and the faith-based recovery movement that emerged from our generation boasts up to 70 percent of participants in recovery. I personally know some two dozen healed homosexuals and the experts in the field of their healing report similar stats to those we see in the addictions arena. Our teen children – largely due to revitalized and re- visioned abstinence education – have cut the numbers of the sexual- ly active in their generation in half and their abortion rate by 40 per- cent. All that is needed is a heart to seek the Lord of Life and a will to re-program the experiment in His image. This heart, this Lord and this will is enough for any generation in any nation.
