Laughter rang through the halls of Bidwell Elementary School Oct. 12 during the seventh annual Harvest Carnival, sponsored by the school's parent group, VIBES — Volunteers Investing in Bidwell Elementary School. Through a unified effort of families, staff, teachers, students and volunteers, the event went off without a hitch. Salvestrin gamely braced herself for the inevitable dip in the dunk tank. The cafeteria was aglow and music VIBES members began planning for the carnival months prior and work continued right up until the event. VIBES member Ellie Scott led the decorating| committee who trans- formed the school grounds into a fall fete with corn husks, hay bales and pumpkins. The crowds arrived ready to have a good time. Delighted children scur- ried from game to game with cotton candy and popcorn in hand. The chil- dren got a kick out of being able to take a turn at dunking Principal Clau- dia Salvestrin. Clad in a wetsuit, Mrs. filled the air as carnival goers vied for the delectable goodies at the cake walk. Things were lively out on the playground where families lined up at the photo booth to capture a lasting memory of the event. Parents and grandparents joined in to fun, donning accessories and props for the photos where the motto seems be, "the sillier the better." VIBES members called out raffle winners every 15 minutes and excitement grew as the winners of the larger items were announced. By the end of the evening, every- one left happy with prizes in hand.Feedback from parents and chil- dren confirmed that the event was a success. The carnival could not have been such a success or even taken place without the combined efforts of all involved. Families from through- out the community came out to sup- port the event, businesses gave gener- ously and students from Vista Middle School and Red Bluff High School volunteered their time at the game booths and concessions. Several service agencies brought their rigs and officers to the carnival including the Red Bluff K-9 Unit, the Red Bluff Fire Department and Tehama County Search and Rescue. They provided a hands on learning experience for the children, who were better able to understand the impor- tant role these professionals play in our community. After tallying up the proceeds, all of which go towards spring field trips, VIBES member Teri Downey announced "This has been our most profitable year to date." VIBES mem- bers were all in agreement that they are very fortunate to live in a commu- nity that supports one another and gives so selflessly and wholehearted- ly.
