It was his book, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," that taught me about the single most important personal tool I own -- my attitude. At the time, I was work- ing as an industrial commercial real estate broker in Los Angeles. Through that book, I learned that we are the product of the choices we make -- not due to our upbringing or environment. Our power to choose the direction of our lives makes it possible to reinvent ourselves, to change the course of our lives and to powerfully influence the world around us. I credit much of my success in real estate, which became my way out of debt, to Covey's second habit, "Begin with the end in mind." Adopting that kind of attitude changed everything for me. When meeting with a new client, I would visualize that person signing the final documents and my handing him the keys to his new facility. That changed everything. I began to see every deal as a done deal. My job was to get my client through the often torturous bureaucratic and financial maze necessary to reach that "end," whole and happy. would make that happen. I stopped worrying about if we would ever get out of debt and put all my energy into what we could do every day to make it hap- pen. stopped worrying about if I could close a deal and put all my energy into how I I tions in life, but you can tailor-make your attitude to fit those situations. No matter where you are or what you are facing today, you can choose to build or destroy, to do good or evil; to be positive or negative -- to be a success or failure. Your attitude, the way you respond to life and all of its circumstances, is more important than any- thing. It is more impor- tant than the past, than struggle or success, than education or experience. It is more important than how much money you have, how much debt you owe, what you would like to do or where you would like to go. That's why it is sure- ly our most valuable asset. Without question, the dif- ference between people who live happy and successful lives and those who live with defeat and despair is their attitude. Everyone experiences adversity, disappointments and setbacks. But the little thing that makes the big dif- ference is how you respond to your problems. facing today, it's not your situation that's important, it's the way you respond and the choices you make that will count in the end. It really is up to you.
