5 A Presidential Inaugura- tion. Multiple Olympic Games. A few Super Bowls. Over the course of his ca- reer, Sean McLaughlin '85 has seen and covered it all. During his rural upbringing, these major events may have seemed like a longshot. But his talent—mixed with a little grit—has the former Cyclone delivering the news in some of the country's largest markets. "You don't have to be the smartest guy in the room: you just need to be the guy who outworks everyone in it," Sean said. "Never hide your pas- sion for your job. It rubs off on others and makes a happy workplace." With a graduating high school class of 55, Sean's Epsilon Chapter mem- bership was a worthwhile introduction to working with a wide variety of people. "TKE shaped my collegiate career from the very start," Sean said. "I came from a very small, rural town. Suddenly, I was living with over 100 highly motivated, goal-driven young men from all walks of life. The brotherhood of TKE forced me out of my comfort zone and challenged me to think beyond myself and how I was going to contribute to the world around me." Just a few of those contributions include working on the TODAY Show and CBS This Morning and as a public address announcer for the Arizo- na Cardinals and the 16th Hole at the Phoenix Open. He took his first full-time broadcasting job at KMIR-TV, the NBC af- filiate in Palm Springs, California. After stints at the NBC affiliate in Phoenix and as a meteorologist/reporter for NBC/MSNBC in New York, he is now the main news anchor for CBS 5 in Phoenix. With four kids under the age of 13, Sean and his wife, Emily, have limit- ed free time. But when they do, they enjoy checking out up-and-coming rock bands. While distance separates him from many Epsilon brothers, Sean is thankful for the lasting friendships. "Living in the house among that diverse group of men provided you an immediate and lifelong emotional support system," Sean said. "College life, educational challenges, and just plain growing up can come at you pretty fast, but you always had someone you could turn to." And it would be remiss to not add, "Those sorority mixers were not too shabby either!" Sean can be reached at sean.mclaughlin@azfamily.com.
