THE CHIMES
"When I applied to be an officer in the United States Marine Corps, I had to take a picture
in a suit for my application package," Damon recalls. "A lot of my peers had to scavenge to
acquire this simple item of being a gentleman. Kingford Bavender E-926 '68, the owner
of Bavender Custom Clothiers and an alumnus of Tau Kappa Epsilon, already had created a
tier-one suit for me.
"This relieved some unneeded pressure and made me look like a professional, not a pieced
together man like the other applicants. Also, during the Marine Corps Birthday Ball and other
formal military functions, you are expected to act like an officer and a gentleman. The Red
Carnation Ball and other equivalent events I attended while in Tau Kappa Epsilon did a tre-
mendous job at preparing me for such occasions."
When time allows, Damon returns to Iowa and reconnects with many brothers who were
influential in his college experience.
"It's a brotherhood, or in layman's terms, it's the closest friendship you'll find aside from
going to war with somebody," Damon said. "It's a fraternity for life, so when it's possible,
members should reconnect and enjoy their past. Anybody who had an inspirational father
figure growing up knows that time creates wisdom through experiences. These experiences
will help develop current members of the fraternity."
