N.C. Naval Squadron Civil War Reenactment at Campbellton Landing by KAREN POPPELE Civil War, the history of the Fayetteville/Cumberland County area and big guns (think cannon) will want to gather by the river on Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and 30, when the North Carolina Naval Squadron (NCNS) presents its 8th Annual Civil War Reenactment. Sherman crossed the river here after passing through Fayetteville. The North Carolina Naval Squadron, according to its website, www.freewebs.com/ncnavalsquad, was founded in 2001 in Plymouth, N.C., and "is a group of military re-enactors who portray the Confederate States Navy (CSN) with a marine detachment." The CSN, formed in February 1861, comprised of the navies of South Carolina, A Civil War Reenactment is scheduled for Sept. 29-30 at Campbellton Landing. Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Virginia and North Carolina, and was tasked with defending the coast, breaking the blockade and raiding enemy commerce during the Civil War. The NCNS, which mans a 65-foot, 3/8 scale replica of the C.S.S. Albemarle and represents the navy on water and shore, is also known as the Montgomery True Blues Battery as part of the Carolina Artillery Battalion, manning two six-pound 1841 Mountain Howitzers, a mortar and a Lyle gun, a lightweight gun used to shoot rescue lines out to wrecks in the water. "The reenactment is a general reenactment," said Ronnie Goldman, who has Fvpxssurxurhqxvpxurry8rrwur uvqUuqhrrhvr HhutuTrrir Uurhqyvrrhpuvtu 7hqxvpxsshtrh&) 8CyrUhr$ whom are volunteers. "It's an expensive hobby," Goldman said. "Members come out, buy their own been with the squadron for 10 years and is a sergeant major in the Artillery and a lieutenant in the Navy. "There will be displays of old weapons and different artifacts from the past. We're going to do some cannon fi ring and have an actual small skirmish. People can see the camp and how Civil War soldiers lived." Visitors will be able to "talk" with both Confederate and Union generals, all of uniforms and everything. You have to have a love of history to do it." Goldman explained that he just always liked Civil War history and actually served in the Navy, so he thought he would give it a try. "We're trying to preserve the history of our area," said Goldman. "We're getting ready to start a local artillery group. On Saturday, we're going to actually fi re the cannon at night."
