While the Cardinals Dead even at 23-23-1 after Corning defeated Red Bluff 42-13 last year. And the Cardinals have held on to the Shootout trophy for the last three years. What's more, both teams have opened their seasons with two straight wins. Bluff accomplished that was in 2009. For the Cards, it was 2010. There's also a new- car smell to these teams. The Spartans have a The last time Red new head coach in Corey Hein, who isn't a stranger to Red Bluff football, having coached junior varsity, but one wouldn't be off to expect an adjustment period. So far, his offense, both through senior quarterback Garrett Sandow, who has been remarkably accurate, and on the ground, where senior running back Tucker Gulliford ran for 331 yards last week against Anderson and scored four touch- downs, has adjusted expectations on the sea- son to be less dire than last year. Daily News file photos by Rich Greene Hein has driven his team to 101 points in two games. For Corning, gone is star Ryan Holland. The Cards are starting junior quarterback Chayce Maday, but head coach John Studer's offense continues to be dedicat- ed to the run. "We're pretty young, pretty inexperienced," Studer said, adding, "We're probably a little fortunate to have won two games in a row. We haven't necessarily played spectacularly but we've played good enough to win and able to overcome some of those rookie-like mis- takes." On defense, defensive coordinator Bob Hall said last month that it's the greenest team he's coached in years. In two games, against Las Plumas and Oroville, the Cards have given up 19 points total. Compare that to Red Bluff's allowed 38 points in its first two games, and Corning's defense has been good. Both teams kept Oroville, they're only shared opponent so far, to seven points or under. "Our main philoso- phy is to try to stop the run and force them to pass," Studer said at a recent practice. "What's going to happen when you do that is ... teams are going to complete some passes. And we're OK with that." two teams the Cardinals have played so far have Studer noted that the The Corning Cardinals celebrate after they defeated Red Bluff 42-13 last year. The Cards have won the last three Shootouts. primarily kept the ball on the ground, but forc- ing the pass will still be Corning's priority. On offense, the Cards, Studer said, have been getting good games from Cody Long, who had a 100-yard game against Oroville last week, and Nathan Fultz, who has had two good games in a row. For Red Bluff, the game also marks an end its non-league games (save for an Oct. 5 game against Wheatland) and the start of a three-game stretch against Enter- prise, Shasta and Chico. A win would boost the Spartans to 3-0, which would be more than the team's 2011 total for the season, and in a better position for that much- wanted playoff push. "These guys have little bit of a ... chip on their shoulder," said Hein, Red Bluff's head coach. "We've been a down for a little while and these guys, they believe that they're win- ners and they believe that they can compete. And they're focused on proving that to every- body out there." After a huge offensive game against Anderson where the Spartans put up 745 total yards, the sour point was the 32 points they gave up. On defense, two things happened, Hein said.
