McDavid, 20, finished the regular season with an NHL-best 100 points and is the favorite to win the Hart Trophy as the MVP in only his second season in the league. Since Edmonton won the draft lottery in 2015 and selected the Toronto na- tive No. 1, McDavid has been at the center of the organization's turnaround, leading the Oilers to their first playoff appearance since 2006. McDavid's No. 97 jersey might be the most popu- lar form of apparel in this hockey-mad city, which has again fallen in love with its team after years of disappointment and heartache. Rogers Place, the Oilers' sparkling new downtown arena, will be no doubt be rocking Wednesday as it hosts its first playoff game. "This is a tough matchup for San Jose, especially go- ing into Edmonton," for- mer Sharks forward Jer- emy Roenick said, "where they know that building is going to be as electric and loud a building in the Na- tional Hockey League." Sharks players typically say the greatest way to limit the effectiveness of opposing star players is to make them play defense. On March 30 in Edmon- ton, the Sharks were nearly flawless in the opening 10 minutes against the Oilers. The Sharks established a forecheck, cycled the puck in the Oilers' zone and created a handful of quality chances. Hansen gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead 61 seconds into the game. But a slow Sharks line change helped the Oilers tie the score. Recognizing an opening, goalie Cam Talbot quickly got the puck up ice to Leon Draisaitl at the Sharks' blue line. He fed McDavid, who fed Maroon on the doorstep with a slick pass at the 10:22 mark. The Oilers took advan- tage of another poor line change by the Sharks with 2:32 to go in the first, as Mc- David took a pass from Os- car Klefbom in the neutral zone and beat goalie Martin Jones with a nifty forehand to backhand move for a 2-1 Edmonton lead. "Puck possession matters a lot," NBC analyst Pierre McGuire said. "Force (the Oilers) to have to forecheck rather than dominate with the speed that (McDavid) plays with. His speed quo- tient with the puck on his stick is higher than any- body else's in the league." After McDavid's goal, the Sharks had to chase the game. "If we turn over pucks continuously or get caught cheating on wrong sides it presents challenges," Sharks captain Joe Pavel- ski said. "We have to play a responsible, detailed game against them. That will definitely allow us a chance." The Sharks will not have the last change for the first two games of the series, but that won't stop coach Pete DeBoer from putting de- fensemen Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Justin Braun out there against the line of McDavid, Maroon and Dra- isaitl as often as possible. Vlasic and Braun were the shutdown pair who limited chances for Toffoli, Forsberg and Tarasenko, and were out there against Sidney Crosby and the Pitts- burgh Penguins in the Stan- ley Cup Final. "I think just not giving up three-on-twos to those guys, taking away their time and space. All good players that's kind of the recipe for success," Braun said. "(McDavid) gets his eyes up, he's going to make plays. If you can get on him early, good gap in the neu- tral zone will be huge. "Other than that, you've just got to play those guys hard." Sharks FROM PAGE 1 The Cleveland Cava- liers' LeBron James has the second-most popular jersey, while the top-five also includes the Okla- homa City Thunder's Rus- sell Westbrook at No. 5 and James' teammate Ky- rie Irvin at No. 5. Oakland native Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers is No. 15. WARRIORS RECALL DAMIAN JONES FROM SANTA CRUZ The Warriors will begin the playoffs this weekend — likely Saturday after- noon — against the Blaz- ers. The Warriors are bring- ing back Damian Jones from the NBA D-League in time for the rookie center to contribute during the playoffs, which start this weekend. The team announced Tuesday that it is recalling Jones from the Santa Cruz Warriors — with whom he averaged 11.3 points, 7.2 re- bounds and 2.1 blocks in 31 games this season. You can check out some of his high- lights here. Jones was the D- League's Player of the Month for games played in March and April, in- cluding all three of Santa Cruz's Western Conference semifinal contests (13.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks a game). The 7-footer from Vanderbilt has appeared in nine games for Golden State this season, averag- ing 1.7 points and 1.8 re- bounds over 7.3 minutes. BARNES OUT UNTIL POST- SEASON Matt Barnes went down with a right an- kle/foot sprain during the Warriors' Saturday night win over the Pelicans. He's still walking with a limp and will miss Golden State's final game against the Lakers on Wednesday night. Barnes hopes to be ready for the playoffs, but his status for Game 1 this weekend against the Blaz- ers remains uncertain. "Just a day-to-day thing," Steve Kerr said. "It's not a bad sprain, but it's significant enough that he'll miss the rest of this week and hopefully we'll get him back during the first round, I don't know when." Warriors FROM PAGE 1 belief that he hadn't defin- itively been diagnosed with concussions in the past. "I would like to say none," Posey said. "I feel I've been fortunate in that respect." Bochy originally stated something different, say- ing Posey has "had one be- fore," but then clarified his comments by saying there were times the Giants had watched him carefully without an actual diagno- sis. The Giants have gone through enough of these braininjuriestoknowthere are no simple or quick an- swers. Last year, Joe Panik was hit on the helmet by a pitch at Tampa Bay and stayed in the game, even hitting a three-run homer, but reported symptoms the following day. He missed a month, and acknowledged this spring that his visual acuity wasn't fully restored until the offseason. Brandon Belt also has dealt with recurring con- cussion symptoms after being hit by a thrown ball. Former Giants Gregor Blanco and Ehire Adri- anza also had concussions after seemingly minor in- cidents. And of course, Mike Matheny's career ended unexpectedly when he took a foul tip to the mask in a 2005 game at Miami. Giants FROM PAGE 1 By John Hickey BayAreaNewsGroup KANSAS CITY, MO. A's pres- ident Dave Kaval said that in response to fan sugges- tions, the A's will be taking down the tarps that have covered the third deck and will make those seats avail- able for all games for $15 for the rest of the season. "I was able to watch a lot of games when I was in business school and as an undergrad," Kaval said dur- ing a break from directing the removal of the tarps. "I wanted to see to it that ev- erybody can have that kind of experience." During the 10-game homestand beginning Fri- day, the A's will donate half of the proceeds of third- deck ticket sales to Oakland Promise, an initiative that aims to triple the number of college graduates from Oakland within the next decade. Kaval went to Facebook Live to make the announce- ment at 10 a.m. (PDT) and did it from the third deck where the tarps had already begun to come down. He said he and his team would be working the rest of the day on removing the tarps. The tarps that cover "Mount Davis" above the outfield will remain in place. The third-deck tarps did have the years of the A's nine World Series champi- onships, and they will be coming out as part of the makeover. "We have banners flying in Championship Plaza sa- luting those nine titles," Ka- val said of the area between the Coliseum and Oracle Arena that the team has converted into a gathering place for fans before, dur- ing and after games (except when the Warriors are play- ing next door). "They will be coming off those tarps, but the numbers saluting our Hall of Fame players are still in place on Mount Da- vis." The move will increase the capacity of the Coliseum by 12,103 seats beginning Friday. That first tarp-less homestand includes three games each against Hous- ton and Texas and Rangers and a four-game set against Seattle. "The best fans in baseball deserve the opportunity to experience the whole sta- dium so we have decided to take off the tarps on the up- per deck," Kaval said.
