"Duck Derby is t he most f un and it is our biggest local f undraiser in t he cit y," said Johnny Wilson, execut ive director of Fayet tev ille Urban Minist r y. " We are t he closing ac t of t he Dog wood Fest ival." The f undraiser generates money for Fayet tev ille Urban Minist r y and ot her nonprof it organizat ions and schools. "Anybody t hat par t ners w it h us can rake in proceeds, too, because folk s can adopt duck s to suppor t t heir favorite nonprof it or Cumberland Count y School," said Wilson. "To adopt a duck is $10, so what happens is, if you want to suppor t t he Special Oly mpics, t hen t he Special Oly mpics w ill get half of t he $10 which is $5," Wilson explained. He added t hat t here is a compet it ion. The school or nonprof it organizat ion t hat get s t he most duck adopt ions in t heir name w ill w in t he "Best Par t ner Nonprof it " and w ill receive ex t ra proceeds, love and recognit ion. The cost of one duck adopt ion is $10. Adopt six duck s for $50, 12 duck s for $100 and so on. "Our goal is to race 5,000 or more duck s," said Wilson. "The duck s w ill race in Cross Creek in Fest ival Park under t he walkover bridge." The f irst place duck w ill w in a 2017 25-foot Toy Hauler camper; second place w ill w in f ree groceries for a year f rom Food Lion; t hird place w ill w in f ree groceries for a year f rom Super Compare Foods; four t h place w ill w in $500 cash; f if t h place w ill w in a new set of t ires f rom Ed Tire's; six t h place w ill w in a large f lat-screen T V f rom Wal-Mar t; sevent h place w ill w in a f ree one-year membership to t he Renaissance Spa Fit ness and Wellness Center; and t he duck t hat comes in last place w ill w in a camping tent and a jar of molasses. "The t heme behind t he camping tent and a jar of molasses is to get your camping tent so you can go hang out w it h t he folk s who won t he camper, so t hey can show you how to do it, because you are slow as molasses," said Wilson. " Winners do not have to be present on t he day of t he race to receive prizes." Fayet tev ille Urban Minist r y is a nonprof it organizat ion t hat consist s of four programs t hat prov ide fait h, love, hope and securit y to Cumberland Count y resident s f ree of charge. These programs are t he Find-A-Friend Yout h Program, an Adult Literac y Program, t he Nehemiah Project and Emergenc y A ssist ance.
