CONTRIBUTED The public is invited to hear Southern Gospel at its finest with Liberty Quartet at 6:30p.m. Friday, April 21at the First Church of God, 1005S. Jackson St. A people's favorite in this gospel field. Liberty not only is energetic and humorous, but most importantly have heart to lead their listeners into an intimate worship experience. Theirmusic appeals to all ages and this will be a night of inspirational great gospel music. A loveoffering will be taken at the concert. SOUTHERNGOSPEL St. Peter's Episcopal Church offers worship ser- vices during Holy Week beginning with the Palm Sunday service on Sun- day, April 9, and conclud- ing with Easter services on Saturday, April 15, and Sunday, April 16. The Rev. Maryly Adair will preside at all Holy Week services beginning with Palm Sunday wor- ship service at 9:30 a.m. on April 9. Palm Sunday marks the last Sunday in Lent and the day on which Holy Week begins. This day commemorates Je- sus' triumphant proces- sion into Jerusalem and is marked by a procession of the palms and Holy Com- munion. This year The Passion from the Gospel of Matthew will be read. A Stations of the Cross and Holy Communion de- votional service at 10 a.m. will occur on Wednesday, April 12. This service is a liturgical way to reen- act Jesus' journey to the cross. This service recalls that journey as a medita- tion, and as an act of wor- ship and devotion to God. Two services will be of- fered on Thursday, April 13. A Morning Prayer and Stations of the Cross ser- vice will begin at 9 a.m. Morning Prayer consists of opening sentences, Confession and Abso- lution, recitation of the Psalms, readings from Scripture, the Apostles' Creed, and prayers. This service begins with the Stations of the Cross lit- urgy. A second service at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 13, will be a Maundy Thurs- day Service and features a foot washing and strip- ping of the altar. Maundy Thursday or "Holy Thurs- day" is the day Christians commemorate the Last Supper when Jesus shared the Passovermealwith his disciples and washed their feet on the night before he was crucified. The church altars are stripped at the end of the Holy Eucha- rist, also known as Holy Communion, on Maundy Thursday. A Good Friday service will be offered 7 p.m. Fri- day, April 14 in which there is a remembrance of the crucifixion of Jesus with a day of special devo- tion. The service includes the reading from the book of John, solemn readings of The Passion and the prayers. The celebration of the Easter Vigil will take place 7 p.m. Saturday, April 15. The service be- gins in darkness and then a new light is kindled in the Paschal Candle, repre- senting the light of Christ. The service continues with the readings of the story of salvation from the Old and New testaments followed by Holy Commu- nion. Easter Sunday is cele- brated with Holy Eucha- rist and the Flowering of the Cross on Easter at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, April 12 celebrating the resurrec- tion of Jesus Christ. All are welcome to at- tend Holy Week services. St. Peter's is at 510 Jef- ferson St., on the corner of Jefferson and Elm, in Red Bluff. FIRST CHRISTIAN Church to host Easter celebration All over the meadow and the hill. "We can feel it come. You can feel it in your heart, you can see it in the ground. You can see it in the trees, you can smell it in the breeze. Look around. Look around. Look around." Buds're bustin' outa bushes. And the rompin' river pushes. Ev'ry little wheel that wheels beside the mill. From Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical Car- ousel. Yes, look around. Look around. Oh, how well I re- member those seemingly endless days of winter. I re- call the Michigan winds that chilled my very soul. The grey skies unyielding to the sun. Like the children in C. S. Lewis's, The Lion, The Witch and the Ward- robe, winter seemed eternal. Would the winter storms ever come to an end? But then, little by little, the days lengthened and the pall of winter lost her grip. The bare trees began to bud. The worm encased in its coffin was changed, in a moment, coming forth no longer as a creature that crawls on its belly but with wings of flight. It is true indeed, "Our Lord has written the prom- ise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime." Thank you for saying it so well, Martin Luther. We are told in scripture that in the "full- ness of time God sent forth His Son." I will be so bold as to suggest that in God's great timing, His Son was crucified and rose providen- tially in the spring of the year, giving us an object les- son of how His death and resurrection brings a visual assurance that death must give way to life through Him. A few years ago, as the people of my congregation arrived at the Easter sun- rise service, to their aston- ishment they were met with an empty casket conspicu- ously displayed at the front of the church. I must ad- mit it was somewhat bizarre and, for a few even disturb- ing, but certainly memora- ble. To see an empty casket as a visual reminder that Je- sus's tomb has been opened wide for the world to see it is empty. Even the enemies of Jesus admitted to that fact. The best they could come up with was the pre- text of a stolen body. And yet those who supposedly stole the body would lay down their very lives with the words, "He is risen indeed" upon their dying lips. You and I have every reason to believe that winter's death will one day lose its grip over all. When my brother's casket was brought down the aisle of the sanctuary it was not empty. I recalled that the last time I had walked down that aisle was with my brother by my side. So, I encouraged my fam- ily to keep walking down the aisle of their respective congregations to the com- munion rail where together with the saints above we proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. It was the custom in my brother's con- gregation to cover the casket with a white pall. In so do- ing, it was not unlike Mich- igan snow blanketing the muddy earth in a garment radiant white. The symbol on the pall reminded all of the risen Lord, who called my brother by name in His baptism and made him His own. Following the service, his body was laid into the ground to await the resur- rection of the dead. Yes, our spirit goes to be with Christ but our faith affirms a bodily resurrection and the reunion of spirit and body on the last day. In the early days of the church when a loved one died, their body was ten- derly prepared for burial. Cremation was out of the question, for unlike the Greeks who did not believe in the special creation of man, they saw the body as a gift from God which housed His Spirit during life and in its burial did so as if plant- ing a seed in the hope of the resurrection to come. And so, even as we lay our loved ones down in the bed of the earth, and with the ever- returning spring, we look around, we look above, we hear God's word and believe it in our hearts, that we shall meet again at Jesus's feet. InJuly1982theRev.Dallas Dubke became Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church Red Bluff and Mt. Olive Lutheran Church Corning where he has served for the past 30 years.
