George Kontos began the seventh inning with a poisonous walk and it got worse from there as the Padres scored three runs to take a 7-5 lead. Kontos failed to retire any of the first four batters he faced; Yangervis Solarte hit a two- run double to push the Pa- dres back in front and ac- count for the Giants' third blown save of the season. The Padres added another run on a safety squeeze. Belt's second home run brought them within a run in the eighth, but even with Hunter Pence, Denard Span and Buster Posey on their bench, they couldn't come back against Padres closer Brandon Maurer in the ninth. For the second time on the road trip, the Giants participated in opening day ceremonies and played the Washington Generals. The Padres drew a sellout crowd of 43,441 in their home opener; it'll be back down under 20,000 on Sat- urday, with a sizable num- ber wearing orange. The Giants fans in the crowd did not see a renais- sance performance from Cain, who was less than serviceable. Cain made the first two contributions to Manuel Margot's trophy case, as the rookie hit his first two major league home runs leading off the first and third innings. His fastball appeared even a bit tamer than what he threw in the Cactus League. It would've been worse if right-hander Cory Gearrin hadn't boosted him by getting a double-play grounder with the bases loaded in the fifth. Cain only brushed 90 mph on occasion with his fastball, and he pitched in constant traffic. He took the mound with a 1-0 lead that Panik had fur- nished when he doubled, advanced on a fly ball and scored on a balk. And then he gave it back while fac- ing his first batter of the af- ternoon. Margot hammered a 3-1, 89 mph fastball for his first career home run. When Margot led off the third in- ning, he tagged Cain again. The Padres kept up the pressure from there. Wil Myers doubled and scored on Solarte's single to give the Padres a 3-1 lead in the third. Solarte singled home another run in the fifth af- ter Travis Jankowski had singled and stole second base. After a walk and a field- ing error by third baseman Eduardo Nuñez, Cain left the bases loaded. Gearrin entered and got a double- play grounder from Aus- tin Hedges that kept the Padres from blowing open the game. Giants FROM PAGE 1 hewillhaveconditioningis- sues. "I've been working out and running and doing all types of stuff, but it doesn't comparetoaregulargame," Durant said. The night of the injury, Durant was initially told it was a fracture that would keep him out for months, ending his season. After a depressing 30-minute win- dow, he was delivered the adjusted,morefortunatedi- agnosis: His leg wasn't frac- tured and his season wasn't over, but he still had a gru- elingmonthofrehabahead. Durant stayed diligent in it, making noticeable strides nearly every time he was seen, upgrading from chair shooting to set shoot- ing to on-the-move jumpers in a flash before pushing it to more strenuous activity. Throughout, as his knee re- sponded well, Durant al- ways seemed in high spir- its,optimisticofareturnbe- fore the playoffs. But there apparently were low points, times he said he "went over the deep end." "No doubts (that I'd get back)," Durant said. "But when you're just sit- ting around — I've played basketball my whole life. When someone takes your job away, something hap- pens to you and you can't do what you want to do ev- ery day, sometimes your pa- tience runs thin a little bit. That's just human." Durant credited the training staff for "keep- ing him sane" during those rough points and said that traveling with the team the pastfewroadgameshelped, keeping him more engaged. "I didn't look at it as a career-threatening injury," Durant said. "I knew that it was something I'd over- come." And now that he's back, it's about implementing him back into a team that is thriving. When Durant injured his knee, the War- riors were 50-9. He went down in the first quarter and Golden State lost that night to the Wizards, then lost four more times over the next six games, drop- ping to 52-14. There was a bit of panic from the out- side. "If anyone of us would have went down, we would've struggled," Du- rant said. "If it was Klay, Steph, Draymond, Shaun went down for that period of time, we would've strug- gled because all we do is rely on each other. But they figured it out." Following that slump, the Warriors have rattled off 13 straight wins, led by a reconfigured rota- tion, the hot shooting of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, plus the strong play of Andre Iguodala in Durant's absence. The ro- tation must be reconfig- ured again around Durant and there will be another adjustment period, pro- longed a bit more because Curry is expected to sit out Saturday with a minor left knee contusion. Warriors FROM PAGE 1 Mazara's slam put the A's in an 8-0 hole, but for a mo- ment Oakland seemed ca- pable of overcoming that formidable deficit. Matt Joyce hit a three-run homer in the third and Khris Da- vis added a solo shot in the fourthandtheA'swerehalf- way back. They could have been closer still when they went on to load the bases with one out a few minutes af- ter Davis' homer, but re- liever Alex Claudio induced an inning-ending double play grounder from Marcus Semien and the A's weren't much of a threat until Yon- der Alonso's two-out RBI double in the ninth. Alcantara made the A's opening day rotation in part because of injuries, and he was looking Fri- day to prove the choice was valid. But the right- hander who is out of op- tions, walked two, hit a batter and was the vic- tim of a bad break when what seemed to be an out at first base in the first in- ning didn't go the A's way and cost a couple of runs on a Rougned Odor two- run homer. • Sonny Gray threw a 35-pitch bullpen session, throwing all of his pitches and having Mark Canha stand in the batter's box for the last 10 or so. He and manager Bob Melvin and the stuff will talk Saturday about what's next for Gray, who has high hopes of put- ting his right lat strain be- hind him and to be pitch- ing for the A's by the end of the month. • Jed Lowrie has bat- ted in the second, third and sixth spots in the A's first five games, and Mel- vin likes what he sees, call- ing him "the chameleon of our lineup" because of the way he seems to fit well into each slot. • Rajai Davis is off to a .118 start to the season as the road trip starts, but nei- therDavisnorMelvinseems particularly concerned. Da- vis said "I feel good at the plate" and Melvin adds that four games isn't a large enough sample size. A's FROM PAGE 1 a dentist again Friday, is still experiencing pain by simply eating, talking and breathing after taking a redirected Brent Burns slapshot to the mouth on March 25 against Nashville. Couture is a particularly important chess piece be- cause the Sharks' identity is centered around defense this season. As the Sharks' best de- fensive center, Couture, if San Jose were to play Ed- monton, and his linemates would likely be tasked with slowing down McDavid's linewithLeonDraisaitland Patrick Maroon. Then there's Couture's compete level. OnJan.19,Couturefound a way to score the game- winning goal in a win over the Tampa Bay Lightning even though, flu-stricken, he struggled to skate up and down the ice through- out the game. Considering his health with less than a week be- fore the start of the playoffs, Couture will probably need to summon that version of himself if the Sharks are going to have any chance at containing McDavid and advancing to the second round.
