INSIDE Dress to Impress PUBLISHER'S PEN by BILL BOWMAN I read an Associated Press article last week that really hit home. It was about the rights of airlines to restrict what fashion statements their passengers are making. Well, hooray for them. I would like to see more private businesses and public institutions take such action. The airlines have implemented some new rules about how people can dress when they are fl ying the friendly skies. Here's an example of the new guidelines: • American Airlines: Bans passengers who "are clothed in a manner that would cause discomfort or offense to other passengers." • Delta Air Lines: Reserves the right to remove passengers "for the comfort or safety of other passengers or Delta employees" or to prevent property damage. support teachers and principals who use plastic lock ties to hoist up the trousers of their students. With our children starting school this week, it's important to note that Cumberland County Schools have a very strict dress code: The following shall not be worn at school or school-sponsored events during school hours: Calendar ........................................... 14 Concert Connection ........................ 18 TV ..................................................... 20 Movie Review .................................. 21 Free Wheelin' Feelin' ....................... 22 Horoscopes/Advice Goddess ......... 23 Classifieds ........................................ 24 Games .............................................. 26 • Clothing or accessories that denote affi liation with any gang associated with criminal activity, or a safety hazard or security risk • Ill-fi tting clothing such as saggy/ baggy pants or oversized coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, etc. • Clothing with holes, ragged edges, or with patches of different colors or fabric Sagging pants are just one of the many fashion crimes committed on a daily basis. • Southwest Airlines: Forbids passengers "whose clothing is lewd, obscene, or patently offensive." • United Airlines: Bars anyone over fi ve who is barefoot "or otherwise inappropriately clothed, unless required for medical reasons." Our idea of propriety has changed so much that people go out in public dressed like they are casually lounging around in the privacy of their own home. In public places like the mall, Walmart and supermarkets, I see people dressed horribly in what can only be described disgustingly as pajamas or bed clothes. Equally disgusting are the people wearing clothes that are either too big or too small. Ugh! It's hard on the eyes and distracts from the beauty of natural surroundings. It reminds me of lyrics from the '70s song "The Streak" by Ray Stevens when he yells "...don't look Ethel!...Oops, too late." I understand that everyone has the right to express themselves, but, at what point did we lose all sense of personal pride? So you will fi nd this publication supporting small town mayors who ban the wearing of low-riding baggy pants in his community. We also Fayetteville's Weather Forecast August 31 Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Friday Thursday August 30 Saturday September 1 • Spandex clothing or pajama-type clothing Again, we are avid advocates of individual rights and free speech but subjecting the general public, including young children, to such obscene vulgarity is violating their rights. I, for one, have complained to management when I witness this and you should, too. Remember, the '60s term "beautiful people"? Let's all advocate cleaning up the walking litter. Thank you for reading Up & Coming Weekly. BILL BOWMAN, Publisher, Up & Coming Weekly, COMMENTS? editor@ upandcomingweekly.com.
