new shows come rushing at viewers: Which ones should I watch? With a few weeks left until the 2012-13 season officially begins, here's some early help. The pilot episodes for upcoming series have been available to industry insiders, and – based on those first blushes – here, in alphabetical order, are Tribune Media Services TV writers' recommendations for the ones to keep an eye on. "Elementary" (CBS, Thursdays, premieres Sept. 27): Holmes and Watson hit the streets of New York in this sharp take on the oft-adapted tale with British actor Jonny Lee Miller as a drug-addicted Holmes, and Lucy Liu gender-switches Watson – now named Joan It's a quandary every fall, as New shows to watch for this fall – who's Holmes' sober-living companion. The U.S. series doesn't go for the whiz-bang visual effects of the U.K. show, but Holmes is just as irascible here, while Watson is prettier and grumpier. (Kate O'Hare) "Last Resort" (ABC, Thursdays, premieres Sept. 27): In a world on the brink of war, a U.S. nuclear submarine receives orders to fire at Pakistan. After its captain (Andre Braugher, "Men of a Certain Age") questions the command, the sub is attacked by a U.S. warship. Crippled, the vessel crawls to a rustic island, where the crew find themselves at odds with the corrupt mayor and at war with their own country. BY TMS WRITERS whimsy, an at-times odd mix. (George Dickie) Wednesdays, premieres Oct. 10): It's too easy to call vthis a country version of "All About Eve" or "A Star Is Born." The drama – starring Connie Britton as a country star on the fall and Hayden Panettiere as one on the rise – is its own show. Unlike in the Bette Davis classic, Rayna (Britton) never takes the younger Juliette (Panettiere) under her wing, knowing how dangerous she is and not wanting to abdicate her crown so easily. (Jacqueline Cutler) "The New Normal" (NBC, "Nashville" (ABC, Tuesdays, premieres Sept. 11): This sitcom from Ryan Murphy ("Glee") centers on a committed couple (Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha) who decide to have a baby with a sweet single mom (Georgia King) as their surrogate GOLF SATURDAY 12:00 p.m. (CBS-12) PGA Tour Golf The Barclays, Third Round. (Live) (HD) premieres Sept. 25): While visions of glittering marquees and high-kicking showgirls quickly leap to mind, the subject of this series is largely how Las Vegas came to be, seen through the experiences of real-life Sheriff Ralph Lamb (Dennis Quaid), who's tasked with instilling law and order in a region teeming with newcomers. One is Michael Chiklis as ... to the horror of her bigoted grandmother (Ellen Barkin). Murphy is even-handed enough to show that Bryan is a shallow preppie who views the child as the ultimate accessory, while Barkin barks outrageous lines that would make Archie Bunker blush. Did we mention the series is very, very funny? (John Crook) "Vegas" (CBS, Tuesdays, Lamb's main nemesis, a teeth- gnashing Chicago mobster who's ready to go toe to toe with the lawman.
