Agricultureranch farm Fifty years ago when you selected a bull you looked for a pretty bull. If he had won his class at the state fair or a major live- stock show you would brag about your new bull. You chose your bull by his looks instead of his Expected Progeny Differ- ences (EPDs). Tehama Angus Ranch when they ultra-sounded the bulls for their carcass traits. The other day I was at 50 years of advancements & Bill Borror told me that "in 1996, the breeders started a sire evaluation program for carcass traits using ultrasound. "Prior to that time indi- vidual breeders had been using independent ultra- sound evaluators. "In 1996, the American Angus Association devel- oped a program whereby technicians were certified and all ultrasound records were processed by a cen- tral laboratory located at Iowa State University. "The end result by eval- uating both heifers and bulls at approximately one year of age we can come up with fairly accurate pre- dictions of the animals ability to transmit carcass traits. "Before this technology we were dependent upon actual car- cass measure- ments by har- vested-slaugh- tered cattle.
