4B Daily News – Saturday, August 25, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith Has anyone seen god, and if so, in what form? REALIZE GOD IN YOUR SOUL A.M. Bhattacharyya, an active member of the Hindu community: An intellectual, inquisitive, college-edu- cated young man named Naren, driven by a passionate inner urge, was looking for someone who had seen God. After a futile search for some time, he met Ramakr- ishna, an unassuming temple priest and a saintly man, and asked him, "Sir, have you seen God?" Ramakrishna calmly replied, "Yes, I have seen God. I have seen him more intensely than I see you." Naren was so impressed by Ramakrishna's candid and sincere manner of talk that he became his disciple. He launched his own spiritual journey under his guru's guidance and became ordained as Swami Vivekananda. Throughout the long history of Hinduism, to saints and seers like Ramakrishna, simply believing in God was not enough; God must be realized. To realize God, they did not look up in the sky beyond the clouds; they looked deeper and deeper into their own hearts and they found divine presence in their soul. This is no ordinary experience. It transcends normal Three weeks in Israel IV sensory, intellectual consciousness. A God-realized person sees divine presence in all beings, lives a simple, peaceful life of non-attachment and treats all with utmost kindness and compassion. Mandukya Upanishad describes the profoundly ele- vated state of God realization this way: "It is pure uni- tary consciousness, wherein awareness of the world and of multiplicity is completely obliterated. It is ineffable peace. It is the supreme good. … ("The Spiritual Her- itage of India," by Swami Prabhavananda) BELIEVE IN THE UNSEEN Syed E. Hasan, Ph.D., Midland Islamic Council: Belief in the omnipotent, unseen entity — called Allah in Islam — is one of the central articles of the faith. All followers of Islam believe that Allah is the creator of the universe and the master of the Day of Judgment. Who is Allah, what is his form and what are his attributes? These were questions people repeatedly asked Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) during the time he was conveying the message of Islam. The answer came through the divine revelation which comprises Chapter 112 of the Qur'an and reads: "Say (O Muhammad), he is Allah, the one and only; Allah, the eternal, the absolute; he begetteth not, nor is he begotten; and there is no one like him." According to Islamic theology, no human being can ever see Allah, but the Qur'an tells us that Prophet Moses did ask Allah to reveal himself: "And when Moses arrived at our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, 'My Lord, show me (yourself) that I may look at you.' (Allah) said, 'You will not see me, but look at the mountain; if it should remain in place, then you will see me.' But when his Lord appeared to the mountain, he rendered it level, and Moses fell unconscious. And when he awoke, he said, 'Exalted are you! I have repented to you, and I am the first of the believers'" (7:143). This is because bullies have been – by and large – the victims of bullying themselves. Because they are unable to confront their abusers to the point of satis- faction they typically vent their rage at others who become their victims. It is never enough because their wounds remain unaddressed and so are still bleeding. It was that way with the boy who bullied me. I discovered only years later – when we became friends – that he had been the victim of an older boy himself. Unable to stand up to his bully he vented on meuntil the day I fought back. When it was over he promised never again and we even- tually became friends. Over the years God literally brought forth from this man the heart of a servant. He brought forth real healing as well, but only over years. It is like that for Arabs and Israelis. Arabs were bullied for centuries by the Ottoman Empire, a despotic regime that embraced Islam and was centered in modern Turkey. The empire was a feudal society and the average man had nowhere to go as he suffered under the effendis – the Ottoman aristocracy. When the empire fell in 1918 the system survived under colonial rule. Contemporary Arabs recalled the splendor of first centuries of Islamic expansion when they were the cultural and political rock stars of the world, but it was only a mem- ory. Although persecution broke out periodically, Jews actually fared pretty well compared to their Euro- pean brethren – so long as they paid the special taxes levied only against Jews and kept out of prominence. But when Jews began returning in numbers to their ancient land – now occupied for nearly two millennia by Arabs – and began to make the land bloom and prosper as Arabs The appetite for revenge in a could not – and to favor one anoth- er over the other inhabi- tants – the seeds of resent- ment were sown. Unable to address those who had and still lorded it over them, locals began to vent on the newest neighbors. Add the power hungry Husseini clan whose head became the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem – and a protégé of Hitler – and you have a volatile cauldron without peer or parallel. Over the span of two thirds of a century Jews made their traditional homeland bloom. They irri- gated deserts, drained swamps, and learned to prosper in the land. They purchased land at exorbitant prices and – admittedly – discriminated against their Arab neighbors when it came to hiring. But the rising tide raised all boats, including Arab boats. Discrimina- tion issues were addressed and the newer settlers could claim – truth- fully – that they robbed no one and developed only such lands as had been neglected and abandoned by previous owners. They did this in a time of rising blood lust against them worldwide. Truly resettlement in the land of their fathers was their last and best shot at survival. And yet the colonial authorities did their best to keep the Jews out in signifi- cant numbers. In efforts to win favor from Arab leaders in the fight against the Axis powers the British spurned mercy requests from Jewish leaders to greatly increase Jewish immigra- tion. Arab aggression against Jew- ish settlements was fanned and ordered by the Mufti and greatly escalated upon his return from Berlin after the war ended. The British literally stripped Jews of James Wilson GodTalk whatever arms they had and allowed the Arabs to arm themselves as partition approached and the world waited for the annihilation of the Jews in its wake. Instead, the world watched a miracle unfold as tiny Israel fought off the assault of five nations in 1948. Another miracle unfold- ed as Israel reclaimed most of her original bor- ders in 1967. His own words. Yet Arab peoples actually stem from the same Abra- hamic root as do the Jews if we believe the scriptural accounts of Hagar and her son, Ishmael. God loves the Arabs and sent His Son to die for them – as He did for the Jews – according to His same Word. As it was with my friend, the first thing to be done with a bully is to stop him in his tracks. But the second and more impor- tant thing is to seek healing and reconciliation across the board. The world can help the process by honoring the integrity of both par- ties to it, addressing the historical wounds the Arabs have suffered but beginning with the Jews' right to the homeland they have reclaimed. Or we can just watch and ask Israel to shoulder the bur- den. He would bless those who bless Israel and curse those who curse her apparently heeds The God who said The Rev. James Wilson leads PrayNorthState and has ministered in Tehama County since 2001. This is the last in a four part series based on his recent trip to Israel. Hear him at 8 a.m. Saturdays on KBLF AM 1490. And bless Israel.
