Team officials declined Thursday to respond to a published report in a Vir- ginia paper that the team will join Comcast-Specta- cor and Live Nation in pitching an arena proposal to Virginia Beach city offi- cials next week. Citing anonymous sources, The Hampton Roads Business Journal said team owners are expected to be in Virginia on Tuesday when Comcast unveils an arena proposal. Luke Scott's pinch-hit double got a run back for the Rays in the ninth before Grant Balfour finished for his 13th save. Gomes' homer off Joel Peralta (1-6) broke a 3-3 tie and sent the Rays to their second loss in eight season. Gomes, who played for the Rays from 2003-2008, has hit safely in all eight of his games against his former team with three homers in 26 at- bats. It was his 15th home run of the Ben Zobrist's 15th home run opened the scoring for Tampa Bay, but Yoenis Cespedes' triple keyed a two-run fourth inning for Oakland. The inning ended when Josh Don- aldson was caught trying to steal home with the bases loaded. The Rays also failed to convert a bases-loaded situation. The calls began flowing again this spring after a proposed $391 mil- lion arena deal in downtown Sacramento fell apart, according to team officials. Mayor Kevin Johnson and NBA officials both said Thursday they have gotten no word of any Kings involvement in the Virginia Beach proposal. The team negoti- ated a deal in 2011 to move to Anaheim, but pulled out after NBA officials coaxed the Maloofs into staying at least another year to see if an arena deal could be done in Sacramento. A proposed deal fell through this spring. Communications con- sultant Doug Elmets, who has worked in the past with the team, said he questions the Maloofs' sincerity. "With the Maloofs, it's not what they say, it's what they don't say," Elmets said. "If they are absolutely com- mitted to Sacramento, then why not be transparent in this most recent rumor? By saying no comment, it means you have something to hide." The Virginia rumors Elmets is a spokesman for Thunder Valley Casino, one of the King's million- dollar sponsors last year. In light of the rumors, he said, casino management would postpone signing an adver- tising deal with the Kings for this season "until we know more definitively about their plans." Sacramento City Coun- cilman Jay Schenirer said he has heard nothing about a possible Kings move to Virginia Beach. Moss, said he heard about the report from anoth- er council member and had been told the plan was hatched by the mayor, the vice mayor and the city manager. "To the best of my obvious that the Kings aren't that interested in staying in Sacramento," said Fong. "We thought we had a deal with them for a new arena, but they kept finding ways to say no to it. Then they said they wanted to rehab the current arena, but I've seen no plans to do that. It's fair to conclude that they are looking elsewhere." The previously unpublicized litigation was filed in San Francis- co Superior Court in November, the Contra Costa Times (http://bit.ly/OeEumk) reported Friday. A trial is scheduled to start Aug. 19, 2013. Navarrette was beaten unconscious by a group of men in the parking lot. Long was shot four times while attempting to help his friend. No suspects have been charged. The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified dam- ages, says the incident has affected both men physically and economi- cally. The city's vice mayor, Louis R. Jones, said the council had been contacted about a proposal to move a team there but added he knew few specifics. Terry Kelley, vice presi- dent of the Meridian Group, which reportedly will han- dle public relations for the plan, said in a phone mes- sage that he could confirm only that there would be a press conference next Tues- day after the Virginia Beach council meets. "As far as the Sacramen- to Kings, I'm not privy to any of those discussions," Kelley added. "The devil's in the details," he said. "I don't believe in public subsidies for anything. Anyone who wants to come and spend their own money without public subsidies, whether it's a 7-Eleven or an NBA team, I don't have a problem with." Moss added that the met- ropolitan area is similar to Sacramento in that it lacks a large corporate base. The area has two Fortune 500 companies, officials said, and the largest employer is the Department of Defense and local Navy installations. The Inside Business report on the proposal indi- cates that the local hotel- motel association would support a $1 hike in the room tax to help fund an arena, something it attrib- uted to sources. But the executive direc- tor of the Virginia Beach Hotel-Motel Association denied that. The 49ers declined to comment on the lawsuit, but in a prepared state- ment said the team is ''committed to providing a safe game day environ- ment for all fans. That commitment has led to the highest security level rating given by the NFL.'' The NFL's attorney declined to comment, and an attorney represen- tative for Landmark Security said the compa- ny's lawyer would not be able to respond, accord- ing to the newspaper. The lawsuit cites the March 2011 beating of San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles as fair warning about security problems at sport stadiums. There were two shoot- ings, two serious beat- ings and numerous alco- hol-fueled fights during and after last year's 49ers-Raiders game.
