St. Patrick: An icon of the season We live in a season featuring more miracles than in any other in history. I have personally wit- nessed multiple healings from can- cer in recent months. God is break- ing the state's drought as He said – in its third year. I've even seen Him hold a cell phone call through three dead zones when the person on the other end was in crisis and needing to maintain contact. (When I drove through those three zones only days later I dropped the call I was mak- ing in each of them.) Even more important to God are the decisions made for Jesus, decisions that reflect the Father's heart and pas- sion. In the past few months it has been my privilege to lead people to the Lord in Barnes and Noble, at the kitchen table of a friend, and over the phone while talking with a high school classmate I had not seen in four decades. It isn't about my gift- edness – whether of miracles or evangelism. People all over the country are reporting visions and miracles and the privilege of lead- ing others to Jesus who have never experienced these phenomena before. God is calling all of His people to practice that Kingdom presence in which the dead are raised, the lepers cured, the blind and deaf restored, and the poor given new vision – as promised in Matthew 11:2-6. But the season is even more after Luke 1:17; the power of God released to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children to prepare a people for righteous- ness. St Patrick – celebrated March 17 – is an ancient icon of the kind of faithfulness in which God loves to unleash His powerful presence. Patrick lived more than fifteen hun- dred years ago, but his answer to Christ is just the kind of counter- intuitive approach God is blessing today like never before. Kidnapped by Irish pirates at about sixteen years of age, Patrick was torn from a life of wealth and ease – and a lip service faith inherited from his parents in the land now known as Great Britain. Frozen with cold, hungry, and forced to wear an iron slave collar around his neck so that all who saw him would know they should kill him if he strayed from the district of his confinement, Patrick had no one to talk to until he encountered what he describes in his journals as "the Voice." Eventually he recognized and gave his heart to the Bearer of that Voice. Over the period of his captivity the Voice comforted, educated, and challenged him at every turn. One day he heard the greatest challenge of his life when Jesus told him, "Rise and walk; your ship is waiting for you." Patrick walked more than two hun- dred miles to the coast without ever being challenged as a runaway slave; when the ship's captain refused to take him aboard without the passage money he disappeared and then returned a few days later with the money and no memory of where or how he obtained it. When Patrick returned to the comforts of his own home he was changed – permanently. The home of his parents was no longer com- fortable to him; he had entered a new life and a new Kingdom world. When the Voice told him that he had been born for such a time as this and ordered him to return to the people who had brutalized him, so that he could lead them home, he went and did as he was told. I have no clue whether he ran snakes out of Ireland, or of his relationship to shamrocks and green beer. I do know he brought the Gospel – and its Lord – to the people of Ireland. I know as well that he brought a model for us. The word for Califor- nia in 2010 is, "Awake sleeper, arise…" It comes from Ephesians 5:14-20, a passage prophesied over the state capitol during the first week of February as PrayNorthState begins our tenth year of min- istry. God has gifted our state with all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and all of the training in their use and celebration that we could ask. He calls upon us now to get on with the task of leading our people home. He says, "I am coming soon, as I understand soon; you need to be ready for my return tomorrow, as you understand tomorrow." Are we in a recession? Do our lives spiral increasingly out of con- trol? Do our churches seem lifeless and obsessed with their own dis- tinctive characteristics instead of the earth-shaking heartbeat of the Lord our God? PrayNorthState can be reached at praynorthstate@charter.net or at 530-941-3470. The Rev. James Wilson is the president of PrayNorthState, now in its tenth year of serving Tehama County and the North State. PrayNorthState is a ministry dedicated to facilitating the Holy Spirit transformation of the region and state. Reform rabbis suggest welcoming interfaith couples NEW YORK (AP) — A Reform Jewish task force on intermarriage said Monday that the movement should do more to encourage mixed-faith couples to be active in Jewish life, including creating spe- cial blessings for major life events such as wed- dings and funerals. The panel proposed no changes in the move- ment's policy on officiat- ing at interfaith wed- dings. Reform Judaism formally opposes the practice but allows each rabbi to decide. Instead, the panel pro- posed other steps, includ- ing educating rabbis on how they can engage intermarried families, and creating blessings for ceremonies that involve a non-Jewish spouse. Leaders of the task force said their two-year study represents a shift away from trying to pre- vent intermarriage and toward encouraging mixed-faith couples to create Jewish homes. The intermarriage rate for U.S. Jews has been above 40 percent since at least the 1990s. Slowing the trend has become one of the biggest concerns of the Jewish communi- ty. The Conservative and Orthodox movements bar rabbis from presiding at interfaith weddings. The Reconstructionist move- ment also opposes offici- ating but gives rabbis individual discretion.
