Pelosi: Health care bill expected to pass soon WASHINGTON (AP) — Under White House pressure to act swiftly, House and Senate Democratic leaders reached for agreement Friday on President Barack Obama's health care bill, sweetened sud- denly by fresh billions for student aid and a sense that breakthroughs are at hand. ''It won't be long,'' before lawmakers vote, predicted Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She said neither liberals' disappointment over the lack of a government health care option nor a traditional mistrust of the Senate would prevent passage in the House. At the White House, officials worked to maximize Obama's influence over lawmak- ers who control the fate of legislation that has spawned a yearlong struggle. They said he would delay his departure on an Asian trip for three days — until March 21 — and he will go to Ohio next week for a cam- paign-style pitch for his health care propos- als. The delay gives congressional leaders much-needed breathing room to finish the legislation and nail down support from wavering lawmakers. ''I'm delighted that the president will be here for the passage of the bill; it's going to be historic,'' said Pelosi, D-Calif. — though there's no guarantee the House can act by then. A procedural vote in the House Bud- get Committee is set for Monday afternoon, but as of late Friday lawmakers still hadn't gotten the final analysis from the Congres- sional Budget Office that they need to go forward. Senators question lobbying, CEO pay of Boys & Girls Clubs WASHINGTON (AP) — A group of Republican senators is questioning high salaries and expensive travel bills for exec- utives at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Ameri- ca, raising issues that could jeopardize mil- lions in federal funding for the national charity. The four senators said they were con- cerned that the chief executive of a charity that has been closing local clubs for lack of funding was compensated nearly $1 million in 2008. They also questioned why in the same year officials spent $4.3 million on travel, $1.6 million on conferences, conven- tions and meetings, and $544,000 in lobby- ing fees. ''The question is whether or not a very top-heavy organization might be siphoning off federal dollars that should be going to help kids,'' said Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. The senators sent a letter to the head of the charity's board of governors Thursday seeking detailed financial information about executive compensation, travel and lobbying expenses, and how the national charity awards grants to local clubs. The issues they raise could threaten the reputation of a popular charity that supports 4,300 local Boys & Girls Clubs serving about 4.8 million children. The timing threatens a bill moving through the Senate that would provide up to $425 million in federal money to the national organization over the next five years. Suicide bombers strike seconds apart, killing 43 LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Two sui- cide bombers killed 43 people in near- simultaneous blasts Friday, the fourth major attack in Pakistan this week and a clear sign that militants have the power to strike targets despite months of army offensives and U.S. missile strikes. The twin bombings, which also wounded about 100 people, raised fears of a new wave of attacks by Islamic mil- itants. With no explanation of why the violence is surging now or how long it could last, Pakistanis have been left to guess at how bloody the situation could get. ''This is an attack against our people, our country,'' said senior Lahore official Sajjad Bhutta, calling on law enforce- ment agencies to improve their intelli- gence networks. Underscoring the widespread fear, a series of small explosions injured at least three people and sparked panic in anoth- er Lahore neighborhood late Friday night. Police officials said the five low- intensity blasts apparently resulted from loose explosives scattered through the residential area of Iqbal Town. While the explosions terrified residents and sent police and rescue workers racing through town, there were no reports of deaths or major damage. The two suicide bombers, who were on foot, set off their explosives within seconds of each other near two trucks carrying soldiers on patrol in RA Bazaar, a residential and commercial neighbor- hood with numerous military buildings. About 10 of those killed were soldiers, said Police Chief Parvaiz Rathore. Clinton stings Israeli PM with criticism WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Friday delivered a stinging rebuke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his government's announcement this week of new Jewish housing in east Jerusalem, calling it ''a deeply negative signal'' for the Mideast peace process and ties with the U.S. The State Department said Clinton spoke to Netanyahu by phone for 43 min- utes to vent U.S. frustration with Tues- day's announcement that cast a pall over a visit to Israel by Vice President Joe Biden and endangered indirect peace talks with the Palestinians that the Obama administration had announced just a day earlier. The length and unusually blunt tone of Clinton's call underscored the adminis- tration's concern about prospects for the negotiations it has been trying to orga- nize for more than a year and its anger over Israel's refusal to heed U.S. appeals not to make provocative gestures. Clinton called ''to make clear that the United States considered the announce- ment to be a deeply negative signal about Israel's approach to the bilateral relation- ship and counter to the spirit of the vice president's trip,'' State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters. ''The secretary said she could not understand how this happened, particu- larly in light of the United States' strong commitment to Israel's security and she made clear that the Israeli government needed to demonstrate not just through words but through specific actions that they are committed to this relationship and to the peace process,'' he said.
