Those around me who are not as enamored with the style of music tolerate me. The observers chuckle behind their hands as they note my attempts at clog dancing. The music moves my body and mind and banishes unpleasant thoughts from my very busy mind. The preschool children I teach love the instrumental music and do not see the sounds and sights of Irish melodies in negative ways. They join into the rhythm of the music and totally in love with clog- ging. They wait for their turn for the drum and shakers to accent the music of Ireland. Smiles frame their wonderful faces. The children will be making potato head leprechauns and will listen to the make-believe story of such creatures. Boys and girls alike will take turns pretending they are leprechauns who hide pots of gold and leave green foot-prints behind. They plan to have these on dis- play from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 19 at the First Church of God Preschool Open House. A Granddaughter aware of my Irish music dedication brought me an Irish Cookbook from her visit to Ireland. I enjoy reading it as well as trying a recipe now and then. I have noted that many good recipes are made with available items from their gardens and food left over goes into a new meal I tried making the fol- lowing recipe. It is a uni- versal way of using up almost any kind of left- over bread. Guests eating this have asked for the recipe. Irish Bread Pudding Eggs-1 cup; Milk -1 cup; Light Cream -1/2 cup; Ground Cinnamon - 1 tea- spoon; Grated nutmeg-1 teaspoon; Vanilla-1 teaspoon; Stale Bread of any kind, torn into small pieces; Butter or Margarine-1 cup; Soft brown sugar-1 cup; Rolled oats- 1cup; Whipped cream to use as a topping. Whisk the eggs, milk, cream, spices and vanilla in an oven proof dish. Add the bread, press it down and leave it to soak for at least 2 hours. Blend the butter and sugar; add nuts and oats and spoon over the top of the bread mixture. Bake in oven at 350 for 40 min- utes until springy to the touch and golden brown on top. Serve hot with whipped cream. It can be served cold, cut in slices. I am guessing that a few readers are getting pretty hungry just reading the recipe. I have served this to all ages of people and it was well accepted. Begorra now I am remembering that our change to daylight savings time is on Sunday, March 14 so I feel obligated to include this reminder to readers. Just remember to spring out of bed and whip up some Irish Bread pud- ding. Put on an Irish Music CD while you are getting ready to make it to church on time. In these somewhat hard times using our food carefully may be one of our new decisions for the coming daylight savings times. By the way there is a wonderful, annual Corned Beef and Cabbage St. Patrick's Dinner being held on Sunday, March 14, at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall, 2355 Monroe St. in Red Bluff. The dinner is served from 5 to 7 p.m. Put on your "wear- ing "O the green" and enjoy. Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays.
