SACRAMENTO AP) — Bran- don Roy scored 28 points and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Sacramento Kings 110-94 on Fri- day night for their third straight victory. Ahead by 15 at the half, the Trail Blazers came out strong in the third quarter in building the lead to as high as 26 points. Fol- lowing a quiet first half with two points, LaMarcus Aldridge scored 12 in the period as Port- land went ahead 87-66. Carl Landry had 18 points and Francisco Garcia scored 17 for the Kings, who committed 20 turnovers and have dropped four of five. Jason Thompson scored 15 points, Beno Udrih had 13 and Tyreke Evans had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Aldridge scored 18 points, Andre Miller had 15 and Nicolas Batum added 11 for Portland, which never let the lead dip close to single digits in an uninspired fourth quarter by both teams. The victory keeps the Blazers four games ahead of Memphis in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Blazers, who have won six of seven games and are 8-2 since a Feb. 21 loss to Utah, are now a season-high 12 games over .500 at 40-28. The Kings had a brief 7-5 lead in the opening quarter, but the advantage was fleeting. The Blaz- ers frustrated the Sacramento defense repeatedly and also visit- ed the free throw line frequently in building the sizable lead by halftime. The frustration boiled over for Kings coach Paul Westphal late in the third quarter. Following a foul call against Kings reserve guard Garrett Temple with 1.1 seconds left, Westphal strolled up the sideline and told referee Derek Richardson that, ''You guys are worse than we are tonight.'' Coming off his fourth career 40-plus game Thursday night when he scored 41 points to halt a nine-game losing streak at Gold- en State, Roy got going early against the Kings. He had 13 points in the opening quarter, overshadowing Evans, the Kings' heralded rookie. The Kings look at Portland and the team's progress under Roy and hope they can emulate it with Evans leading the way. Roy was Rookie of the Year in 2006-07 and has played a major role in the past three years in transforming the Blazers from a former lottery team to last year's Northwest Division co-champs. A rookie from Memphis, Evans was coming off his first career triple-double, getting 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists Wednesday in a convincing win over Toronto. Roy scored 20 first-half points and helped the Blazers assume a 61-46 by intermission. Landry had 12 points for the Kings, who shot nearly 53 percent but com- mitted 10 turnovers. NOTES: The Blazers had just two turnovers in the opening half and made all 17 free throws. Kings rookie Jon Brockman has missed the last 12 games with a sprained right knee suffered in practice Feb. 19. The Blazers made 29 of 32 free throws. Grim played quarterback, basket- ball and ran track for the Spartans form 1959 to 1963. He was a section champion low and high hurdler at Red Bluff before moving on to Oregon State University where he played quarterback and wide receiver on the football team and two years on the basketball team. Grim was drafted by Minnesota in the second round of the 1967 NFL draft and played 11 seasons with the Vikings, New York Giants and Chica- go Bears. He earned a Pro Bowl nomination in 1972 and played in two Super Bowls. Grim will join 11 other former major league level athletes at the award ceremony, being held in Yuba City. The other inductees are profession- al football players Ken O'Brien, Rolf Benirschke, Hal Athon, Doug May- berry, Aaron Thomas and Mike Han- cock, golfers Rod Curl and Pat McGown, major league baseball play- ers Harry Dunlop and Stan Swanson as well as Craig Penrose. Roy, Blazers beat Kings 110-94 Tehama Tracker Spartan golf It was an awful day for g o l f w e a t h e r wise, Fri- day, but Red Bluff's Daniel Frantz still made the most of the first round at the Father Joe Barry Masters Tournament in Carmichael at Ancil Hoffman golf course. Frantz finished with a 73, just one stroke over par on a day where rain and wind gusts wreaked havoc on the players. "It was defiantly an emotional struggle to stay in it," Frantz said, Friday. But on the other hand Frantz said he found some fun in battling weather con- ditions that even made grip- ping clubs difficult. Right behind him was Blake Gardner, who shot an 82, but said it was his own putting and not the weather that hurt his score. "I didn't play too well today, I was putting pretty bad," Gardner said. "It was a nice day for me besides the putting." Bryan Benton finished with an 86, Drew Wagner and Shane Graham each shot a 91 and Brad Patchen had a 98. Frantz said the Spartans put themselves in position for a strong finish, Satur- day, at a tournament that includes around 20 top- notch teams "If we stay focused again, if we put together another good round as a team," he said. And it would certainly help if the conditions were better. "It's probably the most difficult conditions I've ever played in," Shane Gra- ham said of Friday. They opened their sea- son on Tuesday with five scoreless innings against Orland, before their offense exploded for 13 runs in the final two innings for a 13-0 win. Cody Fox had held Corning in the game with five strong innings on the mound, including 10 strike- outs. On Friday, Corning pounded Anderson 21-0 then knocked off Oroville 6-5. Marc Mason threw a five-inning one-hitter against Anderson with five strikeouts. Caleb Johnson is leading Corning in hitting through the first three games, going 4-for-8 at the plate. Tyler McIntyre has a .429 batting average and has hit a homer and driven in four runs. Fox and Mason have also driven in four runs. Duchscherer throws in simulated game MCT photo Carl Landry dunks, Friday night, at Arco Arena in Sacramento during the Kings110-94 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. PHOENIX (AP) — With all his injuries over the past few years, Oak- land right-hander Justin Duchscherer wasn't about to let a line drive off his left thumb keep him off the mound. Duchscherer threw 30 pitches in a simulated game Friday, his first outing against hitters this spring training. Max Stassi's line drive caught Duchscherer on his left thumb, which then ricocheted off his right shoulder. Duchscherer fell to the ground. ''I was scared seeing the ball coming at me,'' Duchscher- er said. ''If I didn't block it, the ball would have hit me in the face.'' Stassi rushed to the mound along with coaches and team- mates. ''I felt bad,'' Stassi said. ''I'm glad he was able to get his glove up in time.'' Duchscherer feels healthier than he's been in five years and hopes to start the season in Oakland. ''I see myself as one of the best pitchers in baseball,'' Duchscherer said. ''My only concern is if I have time to get ready to throw six innings." Catcher Landon Powell said his stuff was good enough to pitch in a game. ''We've all missed having Duch in the clubhouse,'' Pow- ell said. ''We're all rooting for him. Duch has had bad luck in spring training. I've seen him get hit every year. I'm glad he got it out of the way this year.'' Duchscherer said he was distracted as the pole of the screen came back into his peripheral vision. ''I don't like screens,'' Duchscherer said. ''Out of my windup my eyes get a little off. In the past I've asked for the screen to be taken away and I've gotten hit. Now, even with the screen, I get hit again.''
