8A Daily News – Saturday, August 11, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith participating in groups? CHOOSE HOW TO CONNECT Rabbi Avi Weinstein, head of Jewish Studies, Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy: People have different temperaments, and one should not necessarily be favored over another. The desire to contribute should always take one's personality into account. The sage Hillel declared: "Do not separate yourself from the community!" I always wondered why he didn't articulate this sen- timent differently. Why didn't he say, "Be a part of the community," or "Join the community?" Hillel understood that the natural state of things is that one is born connected. We are born into relation- ships, so the first act is to deny this, to deny being a part of something greater than yourself. A great sage, Rabbi Yehuda Loew of Prague, once declared that one is less alive if one is not living in rela- tion to others. Am I wrong because I like helping at church but not That being said, a person needs to choose how one connects to his or her community. Some do it by help- ing out and others by joining groups; both are connect- ing each in his or her own way. Joining a sacred community and helping that com- munity further its mission is an honorable way to show that one is part of something larger. Such a person has not separated herself but has connected in a profoundly meaningful way that suits her temperament and con- tributes to the well being of all. CONFLICT DRIVES SOME AWAY FROM CHURCH The Rev. Holly McKissick, pastor, Peace Christian Church in Kansas City, Mo., and Overland Park, Kan.: I can't blame you: People are difficult. More than difficult: They break your heart wide open. To be in a relationship — from a friendship to a small group — is a guarantee that at some point you will be disappointed, probably even devastated. Conflict is unavoidable whenever two or three are gathered in the name or service of any god. life: Everyone, from preschoolers on up, is over-sched- uled and over-stressed. The temptation to slip in and out of worship is understandable. It draws some to mega- churches, where anonymity is the norm. It leads others away from the faith community entirely. Not surprising- ly, a growing number of people have chosen to be SBNR — spiritual but not religious. While this individualistic approach works in some Add to that fundamental truth the realities of modern Israel II: Areasonable comparison It seems like a reasonable request. The story goes that all of the disrup- tions and tensions – and suffering – of the Palestinian people – and hatred of the people of Israel – refers back to the 1967 War. If only we could return to the pre-war boundaries of Israel and start again there would be a hope of real peace. That peace, guaranteed by the United Nations, would leave Israel nothing to fear. Trouble is, the story is more holed with false suppositions than a Swiss cheese. My time in Israel fully convicted me of this beyond any- thing I believed before going there. First it pre-supposes a will to com- promise on both sides. Yet the history of the region is consistent. Israel has given self-government to the West Bank in exchange for the concession of her right to live, but the Palestinian charter still calls for the destruction of Israel. Israel has conceded full sover- eignty in Gaza in exchange for the concession of her right to live, but Palestinian leaders have never made any concession. Israel has gone to the bargaining table after stopping settle- ments on what the Palestinians call occupied lands in exchange for the mere right to live but – and on it goes. In the meantime rockets are fired from Lebanon, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank itself. I stood in the shopping street in Jerusalem where terrorists armed with machine guns blocked escape from the narrow way and gunned down scores of shoppers not long ago. While I was there a Palestin- ian snuck in from Gaza armed with an AK 47 and hand grenades for the sole purpose of killing as many civilians as possible. There is a will to compro- mise – but only on one side. It pre-supposes well armed and financed Israelis brutalizing the poor and backward refugees of the disputed faiths, one cannot be a Christian alone, or a Jew, for that matter. Both religions are, at heart, communal in nature. From Noah's ark to Paul's letters to the early church, the Christian story is about learning to live mercifully, justly and peacefully with others. From the bedroom to boardroom, Christians are called to balance "what makes me happy" with "how are the poor doing?" If you want a viable future where you can live and worship, you can't just slip in and out. There's no cross, no steeple, nothing that says God here on the top deck of the Chief Waupaca as it plies the waters of Wisconsin's Chain O' Lakes. There's nothing that says God unless you count, well, everything else. WAUPACA, Wis. — The lush stand of pines that bends in the unseen wind. The blue heron sun- ning itself on a boulder near shore. The charcoal clouds that let go of their rain at the sound of a prayer. lands – refugees who want only to worship their God in Jerusalem – a city as holy to Islam as it is to Jews and Christians. Reality is that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and has been for three thousand years. It was taken from them by armed con- quest and they recovered it through armed conquest in a war they did not start. (They did indeed fire the first shot in '67, but that starts the war only if massing troops on their borders and blockading all their ports is not starting one.) Reality is that all faiths have been welcome to wor- ship as they choose through- out Jerusalem and all Israel since the Israelis re-claimed the whole city – including the temple mount. Prior to that time Jews were prevented from accessing their holy places even though truce accords and UN man- dates dating back to 1947 required open access. poverty of the refugee camps is the sole Arab reality. Though I do not doubt the stories of the camps, I saw plenty of Arabs driving new Mercedes and I saw the satellite TV dishes on their high rise homes. Reality is that the Arabs who live in Israel prefer it to living under Hamas – for good reason – and only those in the disputed zones express the hatred in which they have been steeped all their lives. Meanwhile the Israelis re-cycle everything they use because they are not a wealthy nation – just a nation that mobilizes all of its resources for survival. That is why I spent two weeks repairing radio antennae for military vehicles. The Israelis are not perfect. They It also pre-supposes the grinding James Wilson GodTalk have committed arbitrary acts and sometimes shoot first and ask questions later. But there is no comparison between a democratically elected government presid- ing over a culture of free- dom and tolerance and a lock-step government ded- icated to the destruction of that culture in favor of Sharia Law. There is no ethical touchstone between a culture that has made a thriving economy – and invited non-Jews into it – out of what was once desert and malarial swamp purchased at exorbitant prices and reclaimed with great labor – and a culture that demands the UN hand it back to them. There is no reasonable way to call the hostilities between them mutu- ally combative when it all began as the British disarmed the Jews and armed the Arabs led by the Grand Mufti Hus- seini after he returned from years as Hitler's houseguest and apprentice. The Lord God Himself says, "You, mountains of Israel, will put forth your branches and bear fruit for my people Israel…" in Ezekiel 36:8 regarding the return of the people. The Jews want to live in peace in the only land on earth that is actually home to them. It is not too much to ask. The Rev. James Wilson leads PrayNorthState, a statewide ministry of cooperation, encouragement, and proclamation. He has ministered in Tehama County since 2001. Church's cruise offers worship by the sea "The gift of creation reveals to us all of God's blessings," the Rev. Bob Blackburn tells the faithful aboard the Chapel on the Lakes, an hourlong prayer cruise that departs on Wednesdays from the Clear Water Harbor on Taylor Lake. "Nature assures us that God can be trusted to care for us," he said. The chapel is an ecu- menical ministry of Trinity Lutheran Church in Wau- paca, Wis., that has served the vacationers and resi- dents along the chain of spring-fed lakes for 36 sum- mers. Trinity rents the 60- foot stern-wheeler and invites guest preachers from area churches for an evening of prayer and fel- lowship that evokes the divine in ways no man- made edifice — regard- less of its grandeur — could ever hope to.
