8A Daily News – Saturday, August 4, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Church news SELF-INTEREST CAN BE A PROBLEM The Rev. Duke Tufty, pastor, Unity Temple on the Plaza: No matter what the issue or where it is occurring, there is always a percentage of the people plotted solid- ly in the ground of self-interest who come to every con- clusion based on what is best for them individually. They think they are always right; they believe their religion is the only true representation of God; they pound their fists on the table to emphasize their politi- cal views; they campaign vigorously to hold back rights from others that they themselves enjoy; and they do not worry about the consequences that will befall others as a result of what they want. Although it may seem like I am criticizing this type of person, I am not. All people are a wonderful part of the great diversity in which we reside and are worthy of respect. I am simply pointing out these people do exist and I believe their me-me-me thoughts of self-interest have bloated to the point of decreasing the oxygen in their minds and smothering out good reasoning. In dealing with any issue, the primary question on conclusions on social issues? McClatchy Newspapers How can faithful people come to different every person's mind should be, "What is the very best thing for all?" If the people engaged in the issue hold that as foremost in importance, progress will be made and the answer will be discovered. Our differences in opinion need not divide us. GOOD PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT IDEAS The Rev. Pat Rush, pastor, Visitation Catholic Church: Catholic social justice teaching largely devel- oped during the 20th century as the church came to view its mission not only as a teacher to its own mem- bers, but as a servant of the world community as well. As that world servant, the church began to analyze social conditions brought about by developments such as industrialization, national governance and global economics and to reflect on these social conditions in the light of the Gospel. The church advocated for the reform of social insti- tutions to better promote the rights and dignity of each human person and it called upon every Christian to work on behalf of the common good. Church social teaching generally addresses very complex global issues and is necessarily general and somewhat abstract. It becomes then the task of the local churches and individual Christians to analyze the situa- tions of their locale, reflect on those situations in light of the Gospel and church teaching and develop their own conclusions and directions for action. Sometimes people come to different conclusions Three weeks in Israel I arrived in Israel May 17; there is a lifetime to tell about in the three weeks I spent in the land of God's firstborn. Let me begin it with this: In a land in which every home must have a bomb-proof room the repeat- ed admonition from the people is, "Please do not romanticize us on the one hand or marginalize us on the other. We are not just people of war or people over whom nations bicker and bristle. We are people. We live here. We want to just live here." Defense Forces base near Ramla repairing radio antennae that will be re-cycled to service tanks. I spent three weekends with four different Israeli families in the communities of Nes Harim, Be'it Shean, and Jerusalem. I visited a kibbutz out- side Caesaria Maritima and the nearby colony city of Zichron Ya'a- cov. The former is home to Hannah Senesch, who parachuted into Hun- gary during World War II to gather information for the British and res- cue as many Jews as she could. She was caught, tortured, and executed by the Nazis in 1942. The latter was established by Baron Rothschild in the 1880's during the first wave of Jewish settlement. It was one of many locations in which the Jews drained swamps and irrigated deserts to make a living land where only death and disease flourished before. These Jews were urged to go to Eretz Israel and forbidden to enter at the same time over decades because the world hated them and did not know what to do with them. It hates them even more because they have succeeded against all odds. But let me tell you about the people I met, since it is as people they wish to be known. I spent two weeks on an Israeli Daniella and Dashi – eighteen and twenty years old – were my madrichoh – plural for female lead- ers. Daniella is Sabra – born in Israel – while Dashi came from Argentina less than two years ago. They are soldiers doing two years' compulsory service (three for men) and shouldering more responsibility regarding social issues because self-interest clouds their vision. But good and prayerful people may also reach different conclusions because their respective analysis of their local social situations differs. In those instances, they can reasonably argue for different appli- cations of these general teachings. They are observant Jews in this amazingly secular cul- ture – but not too much so. Sergeant Asher is an orthodox Jew who wears his kippah – a small skull cap indicating religious devotion – at all times. He musters out of the army soon to spend more time with his wife and children. He supervises my work and jumps back and forth between clown- ing with the volunteers and snapping, "I 'ate you," in his frustration at the difficulties in com- munication, but he always then laughs and spreads his arms to say, "No, No, I love you, Brother." On the last day I clapped him on the back and told him he was a good guy – which he surely is. He looked up with a broad smile and answered, "Of course," as he prepared to play soccer with some of us. James Wilson GodTalk Israel as His representatives. Avital and Shuki are immigrants from Iran and Hungary; their chil- dren are Sabras and they are Jews – not Messianics, just Jews – who love Eretz Israel as the only land in the world in which they are the landholders rather than the tenants. They own a Bed-n-Breakfast five miles from the Jordanian border and the Sea of Galilee. When they took me to Nazareth to stand and pray in the church over the site where Mary received word she would bear the Christ it was simply showing hospi- tality to their Christian houseguest. But when I asked Avital if she felt the peace inside the place as I did she said she did indeed feel it. They are people I love. I do not think of my friends as evangelistic targets, just people for whom I want all that there can be. These people have been forced Angelle is a 25-year-old civil engineer from Holland, on his fourth volunteer trip. He is strong, good-looking; all the girls like to hang with him. He is Christian without Jewish blood, but explains his presence with, "I love Israel." He tells me that if I visit him and wear my IDF baseball cap on the streets I might be killed. Anti-Semi- tism is running that high in his land, and it is not all from Muslims or immigrants. Avka and Georgia are young Dutch women – nineteen and twenty-two –making multiple trips to volunteer. Georgia knows she is Jewish but fears she cannot prove it and so claim Israeli citizenship one day. Avka just wants to live in Israel. They study Hebrew. Arni and Yonit are American Jews who embrace Yeshua – Jesus – as their Messiah and call them- selves Messianic Jews. They emi- grated in 1990 and hold dual citi- zenship. They release worship in Israel and lead international teams to other lands to worship the God of into war five times and they stand surrounded today by hundreds of millions whose great ambition is their extermination. These same fanatics hate Americans and the freedom we represent with the same passion; our freedom springs from the same wellspring – the God who "for freedom that Christ has set us free," per Galatians 5:1, and says if we hang with Him we will know both truth and freedom in John 8:32. They are not perfect people, just people who ask us not to romanticize or marginalize them. They are not all about war; they are all about living at home. I am proud to know and serve them as God pro- vides. The Rev. Jim Wilson has just returned from a three week stay in Israel where he volunteered on an Israeli Defense Forces Base through an international program called Sar-El.
