Tommy Wingels left the game for undisclosed rea- sons with 6:30 left in the first period and did not re- turn. Sharks coach Pete De- Boer said the team would know more on Wingels, who began the game cen- tering a line with Micheal HaleyandKevinLabanc,on Saturday. Wingels' absence was not concussion-related, DeBoer said. Dell gave up a goal on the second shot he faced Saturday, as Anders Lee redirected a Josh Bailey shot from inside the blue line for an Islanders power play goal just 3:59 into the first period. The Sharks re- sponded, as Pavelski and Burns scored 34 seconds apart in the second period. The Sharks, who were coming off of an impressive 2-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednes- day, had the day off Thurs- day and from all appear- ances after the game, had plenty of family in the area. Certainly enough for a distraction or two, which the Sharks started to for- get about with their strong second period. "Yeah, difficult circum- stances I think. There were a lot of things going on," DeBoer said. "Emotional win the other night, after- noon game. We find a way." "You don't get many fam- ily days. It's nice at the hol- idays," Pavelski said. "It's just good to see the guys really show up and work through it. Whether your legs feel good or not, every- one knew we had a game today." Pavelski buried a wrist shot over the left shoul- der of Greiss after taking a pass from Chris Tierney just 5:09 into the second for his seventh of the season. Burns then picked up his team-leading eighth of the season, as his shot from just outside the Islanders' blue line was tipped by de- fenseman Calvin de Haan and knuckled past Greiss for a 2-1 Sharks lead. The win improved the Sharks' record at SAP Cen- ter this season to 7-2, as they've allowed just 15 goals in nine home games this season. "I didn't think our first five or 10 minutes were great. Felt a little slow, a little sluggish getting go- ing," Tierney said. "But, I thought we did a good job the last 10 minutes getting going. Found a way to get two quick ones in the sec- ond, and just found a way to win tonight." In three prior appear- ances for the Sharks this season, Dell had a 1-1 re- cord, a 1.90 goals against average and a .932 save percentage. In his first ca- reer NHL start on Oct. 18, Dell made 21 saves in a 3-2 Sharks win over the Island- ers at Barclays Center, and was coming off a 32-save performance against the Carolina Hurricanes on Nov. 15. "It's more of a mental thing than anything," Dell said. "You've got to have a good attitude and good headspace. You just have to be ready for the opportuni- ties that you do get." Sharks FROM PAGE 1 Smith and more. "It's hard. It's frustrat- ing," defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil said this week. "But it's the NFL. Guys have tostepup.Youhavetotryto find ways to scheme around the players you have as the season goes on. "We're not getting a lot of get-well-soon cards from therestoftheteamsaround the NFL." Noteamisallowingmore points (31.3 per game) or to- tal yards (431.1 per game) than the 49ers, who've matched a franchise re- cord with nine consecutive losses. The latest blow to the 49ers defense was Sunday's loss of Reid to a season- ending biceps tear in their 30-17 loss to the New Eng- land Patriots. "Losing him is a big loss for our defense. His leadership, his versatil- ity, his play-making ability will leave us with an obvi- ous void," O'Neil said. "But it will be a great opportu- nity for other guys to step up and fill those roles." Jaquiski Tartt, a 2015 second-round draft pick, will take over Reid's spot at safety next to fellow starter Antoine Bethea. But Reid was so versatile this season that O'Neil must call on other plays to handle Reid's duties in other facets, such as when he lined up on oc- casion as an edge rusher and dime linebacker. One player not under consideration at safety, per- haps surprisingly, is Ward, who played there and at nickel back in college be- fore the 49ers selected him in the first round of the 2014 draft. "Jimmie Ward is a corner in our system," O'Neil said without elabo- ration. If Ward is not medically cleared from Sunday's con- cussion in time to face the Dolphins, the 49ers likely will start Florida native Rashard Robinson along withTramaineBrock.Keith Reaser has served as the nickel back in such lineup changes. The No. 3 safety will be converted cornerback Dontae Johnson ahead of Marcus Cromartie, O'Neil said. • After missing the first game of his 90-game ca- reer Sunday, Smith said he gained newfound appreci- ation for football and mo- tivation. • The Dolphins declared center Mike Pouncey (hip) out and left tackle Bran- den Albert (wrist) doubt- ful. Rookie Laremy Tunsil, Albert's potential replace- ment, is questionable with a shoulder injury. Anthony Steen is expected to start at center. • The 49ers are 0-4 on the road and have been outscored 151-81 at Caro- lina, Seattle, Buffalo and Arizona. They've lost 12 of 13 road games dating back to November 2014. • Tight end Vance Mc- Donald's average of 17.9 yards per catch ranks sec- ond among NFL tight ends (minimum 15 recep- tions), trailing only the New England Patriots' Rob Gronkowski (21.6 ypc.). 49ers FROM PAGE 1 "Nick brings it up," Del Rio said. "And boom, then you watch it unfold and ob- viouslyyou'vegot toexecute the play. And then (Rich- ard) runs a nice route and Derek puts a good ball on him. So, that was big. That was huge." Making it more impres- sive all the way around was it's a play the Raiders have never practiced. "That was actually some- thing we drew into the grass," Richard said. "It was an unscouted look, but I was happy the offensive staff had that much faith in me to have me in position to do that." That faith wasn't just gifted to Richard, it was earned. "He's just a terrific young man," offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said of Rich- ard. "On the field, he's great, on the sideline, really good with adjustments, staying positive when we experi- ence theebb ratherthanthe flow of the football game. So, he's terrific all around." As good as the play rec- ognition, throw and catch were, Richard's ability to make the grab on the side- lineandgetdowninbounds might've topped it all. "In my head I was like, 'Stay up, go score,' but it's very smart," Carr said. "To have the wherewithal to get down in that kind of situation and not go out of bounds… That's a risky call. He catches the ball and those are bang-bang deals. Obviously we'll take the first down over time stop- ping, but for him to stay in bounds and be smart as a young player, it says a lot about him." Richard has continu- ally impressed during his rookie season. The hidden gem was found when he attended a rookie tryout in Alameda and earned a free agent contract, then a ros- ter spot and eventually a steady role on offense and special teams. "I don't know how they found him," Carr said of Richard. "I don't know how other teams didn't find him. But I'm glad he's on my team and I'm glad he's going to be on my team for a long time. Very good foot- ball player, obviously, we all know that. Very dynamic, very explosive." • Raiders cornerback David Amerson returned to practice on Friday and was officially listed as ques- tionable for Sunday's game against the Carolina Pan- thers. Amerson missed the past two practices with a knee injury, but worked with the starters during the portion of practice open to the me- dia on Friday. That would be a solid indication he's ex- pected to play. Wide receiver Michael Crabtree (ankle), running back Latavius Murray (an- kle), center Rodney Hudson (knee), left guard Kelechi Osemele (knee), defensive tackle Stacy McGee (an- kle), linebacker Perry Riley Jr. (hamstring) and defen- sive back Keith McGill (ab- domen) were all limited for a third straight day and are all also questionable. The Panthers will have several major absences, most notably linebacker Luke Kuechly. He's out after suffering a concussion last week that forced him to be carted off the field. Panthers Pro Bowl cen- ter Ryan Kalil is out as well with a shoulder injury that he aggravated last week. The injury caused him to miss two games earlier this year. Carolina will also miss Mario Addison, their team leaderwithsixsacks.Hehas a foot injury.
