HowwasyourThanks- giving Day? For my sis- ter and many others the day was met with mixed feelings. My sister-in-law felt alone this year, my brother having died a couple of months ear- lier. My youngest sister's house burned down with- out insurance to cover her loss of finances let alone memories. My oldest sis- ter watched as her 21 year old grandson, while sitting at the Thanksgiving table, was fed by his mother be- cause he had broken his neck in a swimming acci- dent. A fun day of swim- ming turned tragic as he simply dove into the lake. Then it happened. All of a sudden he was at death's door. Was there an unseen rock? It doesn't matter re- ally how it happened but that it did happen. Thinking of Thanks- giving, the UPS man ar- rived in time for the ban- ners to be put up for our Thanksgiving Day church service this year. They are beautiful with the fall col- ors of abundance and the printed words, "Rejoice in the Lord always!" Then I think of those bound in wheel chairs, in hospital beds, and those who sit at Thanksgiv- ing tables alone if at all. I think about my neigh- bors of the North State. What are their hopes and dreams and reasons for thanksgiving? Some of my friends have expressed concern over the election of a new president and the godless direction our na- tion is heading. God is no longer welcome in our schools, our courtrooms, or our nation's gatherings. The words from the Bible on our church's banner, "Rejoice in the Lord al- ways" bring a question to my mind. At an unprecedented time in our nation's his- tory, in the middle of the country's bloody Civil War, on October 3rd 1863President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed: "I do therefore invite my fel- low citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are so- journing in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of No- vember next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwells in the Heav- ens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such sin- gular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverse- ness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoid- ably engaged, and fer- vently implore the inter- position of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to re- store it as soon as may be consistent with the Di- vine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, har- mony, tranquility and Union." Again this year, my fam- ily and yours gathered to- gether in the House of the Lord with hat in hand to give thanks to the Lord. Certainly it is fitting that we come before the God of the Bible. Who in spite of our "disobedience," made for us this privi- leged planet, forming us in a most personal way, and breathing into us His breath of life. In the words of one famous man who said, "He has given us our eyes, ears, all our mem- bers, our reason, and all our senses. He redeemed us lost and condemned in- dividuals, purchased and pardoned us from all sins, from death and the power of the devil, not with gold or silver but with His holy precious blood." Ah! Herein lies the key to our rejoicing always. It is not in the circumstance but in the Creator's Son that we rejoice. For His life-giving sacrifice on the Cross assures us that re- gardless of who resides in the White House, or the state of this nation, or the consequences of living in a fallen world, our thanks- giving doesn't depend on our location, be it in our home or hospital. As the Apostle Paul de- clared while writing in a darkened prison, we re- joice in the One who didn't just tell us how to live or get right with God but made us right with God in His Crucifixion. We rejoice in the One who turned the nails into marks of mercy. His bodily resurrection from death's grave contin- ues to prove that God ulti- mately wins. Therefore why be anx- ious about anything? Phi- lippians 4:6 says that by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, we are in- vited to present our re- quests to God. With the founding fathers of this nation we will continue to "give thanks unto the Lord," knowing no presi- dent, dictator or king has the final say. God's mercy endures forever. We rejoice in the Lord who gives us hope beyond each day into an eternity of joy for Je- sus' sake. InJuly1982theRev. Dallas Dubke became Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church Red Bluff and Mt. The word Advent means coming and is celebrated by the church during the four weeks before Christ- mas. During this time, Christians are asked to prepare their hearts and lives in anticipation of the celebration of Christ's birth. It is a time to slow down and become quiet; a time to meditate about the meaning of Christ- mas. There is focus on the promise that God made to his people and how that promise was fulfilled in Jesus. Advent is a time of waiting in preparation for Christmas; and in the waiting, God comes. The Advent season is an especially appropriate time to experience a Taize Prayer service. The read- ing of the Psalms places all believers in a sense of communion together. Reading of the Scripture allows worshippers to dis- cover God's heart through His word. Silence allows believers to quietly listen for God's message. Prayer provides an opportunity for praise and thanksgiv- ing, as well as a time to share sorrows and joys with God. Ecumenical Taizé Prayer is co-sponsored by the congregations of Sa- cred Heart, St. Peter's, the Tehama County United Methodist Ministry and the Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff.
