Rodeo FROM PAGE 1 That's been at the root of Kerr's recent conversa- tions with players. It'll be part of his future discus- sions with them, too. The Warriors start training camp next Tuesday and open the preseason Oct. 1. "We'll absolutely talk about it as a team before our first game," Kerr said. He'll illicit opinions from all sides. That in- cludes his own, which he shared with the reporters in his pre-camp media ses- sion on Wednesday, speak- ing both strongly and nu- anced on Kaepernick, non- violent protesting and the real message within this whole matter. "One of the best things that's come out of the Kae- pernick issue is that peo- ple are talking and that's a good thing," Kerr said. "No matter what side of the spectrum you're on, I would hope every Amer- ican is disgusted with what's going on in the country, what just hap- pened in Tulsa two days ago with Terence Crutcher. Doesn't matter what side you're on on the Kaepe- rnick stuff, you better be disgusted with the things that are happening. I un- derstand people who are offended by his stance, maybe they have a military family member or maybe they lost someone in a war and maybe that anthem means a lot more to them than someone else. But then you flip it around and what about non-violence protests? That's America. This is what our country is about. It's a non violent protest. It's what it should be about. So I think Co- lin has really clarified his message over the last cou- ple weeks. I would think that something similar will happen in the NBA. And as I said, no one has to be right, no one has to be wrong. I would hope ev- eryone respects each oth- er's points of view. There are valid points of view on both sides. But as I said, I think Colin, when he met with Nate Boyer, decided to kneel instead of sit, ac- knowledged his respect for the military and re- ally clarified his message that this is about unarmed black people being killed indiscriminately around the country and it just hap- pened two days ago. That's the message. That's what matters. The other stuff, you can talk about all day. Nobody's right, nobody's wrong. But that matters and everybody should be trying to do something, whatever's in their power." This isn't the first time Kerr has voiced a strong public opinion on a divi- sive political matter. A few months back, while speak- ing on a podcast with Bay Area News Group colum- nist Tim Kawakami, Kerr spoke out strongly against gun violence, advocating stricter gun control laws. "Everybody has their own thoughts on what they think is important," Kerr said. "When you're in the limelight, you do have to think: 'Do I want to say something? Am I the right person to say something?' I felt like I was the right per- son to talk about gun con- trol because of what hap- pened to my dad (he was shot and killed in 1984). I felt strongly about it. I'm sure there was a negative reaction. But again, it's dis- course." As this new version of the Warriors tries to mesh quickly on the court, it'll be facing a massive wave of media attention, which can often throttle a form- ing team. That's a tidal wave of interest and cover- age that'll only grow stron- ger should the players layer on scrutiny by taking on off-the-court issues. But if they have a desire to be so- cially active, it sounds as if they'll have complete sup- port from their coach. "It's a tricky topic — not the Kaepernick situation, just social activism in gen- eral," Kerr said. "There are a lot of fans out there who say 'Stick to sports. We are trying to get away from that by watching your team play.' And I un- derstand that. But these guys do have a voice and, again, in my mind as long as the message is clear, I'm all for people speaking out against injustice. What- ever form that takes, if it's non-violent and it leads to conversation, then I think that's a good thing." Warriors FROM PAGE 1 DAN HONDA — BAY AREA NEWS GROUP Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr chats with the media at the team's practice facilities in Oakland on Wednesday. than that, I was executing for the whole game." All three of the young starters gave the A's a chance. But miserable hit- ting throughout kept Oak- land on the short end. "I thought his stuff was good today," Melvin said of Mengden. "For the series, it's been great. That hasn't been the issue. At times our starting pitching has been this issue, but certainly not this series. That's a group that swings the bat pretty well, and we held them down." The A's offense, on the other hand, simply doesn't look the same as it did on the last road trip, scoring 65 runs on 82 hits in 63 in- nings. This time the A's had seven runs on 13 hits in 28 innings. "We just didn't swing the bats like we did on the road trip," Melvin said. Maxwell said he thought he'd put a tag on sliding runner George Springer in the seventh, but didn't get the call. Brett Eibner hit a potential two-run dou- ble in the sixth, but the ball hopped the fence for a ground-rule double and just one run scored. Had the ball hit the fence on the hop, two runs would have scored. "The ball just didn't roll our way," Maxwell said. "I thought I had the tag, but it was a good call, especially on the replay. Unfortunate things happened here." Notes • Khris Davis, who was sent home mid-game Tues- day night, was back with the club Wednesday but still feeling a bit under the weather. Melvin said he was leaning against using Davis as a pinch-hitter, but said "we'll see how he re- sponds." • J.B. Wendelken may be the next A's pitcher fac- ing Tommy John-style lig- ament replacement sur- gery in his right arm. Wen- delken had an MRI earlier this week that indicated damage to the elbow liga- ments. He will be getting a second opinion soon. "We'd have to say there's a chance of surgery," Melvin said. Chris Bassitt and Fe- lix Doubront both had the surgery earlier this year, and Jarrod Parker is still trying to come back after having had multiple sur- geries. • Former A's starter Dave Stewart, the Dia- mondbacks' GM, was on hand Wednesday to give the A's Dave Stewart Award for community service to catcher Stephen Vogt. Stewart also threw out the first pitch. • Sonny Gray is sched- uled to throw before Sat- urday's game to hitters, which could set the A's ace up for one more appear- ance on the mound before the season ends. "There's a chance," Melvin said when asked if this could be the last step before a return to the mound for Gray. "We might just sneak him in once." It would probably be as a starter, going two or three innings. • It may be a while be- fore the A's know how long the recovery time will be for A's starter Henderson Alvarez, who had shoul- der surgery Tuesday. "The fact that it was a successful surgery is positive," Melvin said.
