ByAnthonySlater BayAreaNewsGroup In the past few weeks, Steve Kerr sat down with some of his players for an open conversa- tion. He wanted their thoughts on the Colin Kaepernick situ- ation, on the tragedies contin- ually befalling the nation, on the latest death of an unarmed black man in Tulsa, on the topic of non-violent protesting from big-name athletes. "What do you think?" Kerr said he asked them. "What do you feel?" "That's kinda the way we do things around here," he said of the conversations. "We like to talk about stuff, basketball or not." In the coming months, Kerr will be thrust into an interest- ing spot. As an NBA coach, he's blessed with a talented tool- box unlike any other: two in- their-prime, MVP caliber, first ballot Hall of Fame stars, plus two more fringe All-Stars. His coaching counterparts can only dream of a situation like that. But that doesn't mean there aren't some unique challenges attached. One of the biggest is derived from the expected attention around this team. The Warriors are loaded with big names. And big names means influential voices. If desired, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant and whoever else attached to both their's and the franchise's global brand can make noise if they speak out, whether that's through na- tional anthem protests or oth- erwise. Kaepernick got the ball rolling. Guys like Curry and Du- rant and the other Warriors can kick it into overdrive. THESCORE By John Hickey Bay Area News Group OAKLAND The good news for Oakland coming out of being swept by the Astros this week is that they won't have to face Evan Gattis again until 2017. Maybe by then he'll have given up his Babe Ruth impersonation. The Houston DH was in full Bambino mode this week, though, hitting three homers, including two Wednesday to help the As- tros complete the sweep with a 6-5 win. Some of that bombast the A's couldn't do anything about. Dan- iel Mengden threw a pitch almost in the dirt and Gattis hit it out to right for a two-run homer in the sixth. "The pitch to Gattis is a good pitch," manager Bob Melvin said. "It's almost on the ground and he golfs it out of the ballpark." On the other hand, he had the capacity to surprise the A's. In the eighth inning, Zach Neal started him off with a first-pitch fastball. "I figured he'd lay off at least one pitch," Neal said. Gattis didn't. Instead he hit one of the longest homers this year in the Coliseum. He has eight homers off Oakland this year, four more than any other player, and four more than he has against any other club. It was the Astros' final run of the day and they'd need it, be- cause the A's kept trying to come back until pinch-runner Aris- mendy Alcantara was thrown out trying to steal a base to end the game. Even then the A's pressed the issue, but an umpires' crew chief review of the play at second base didn't overturn the call and the A's were back at 20 games under .500 at 66-86. Still, the final month of 2016 is more about 2017 than anything else, and the A's are liking what they are seeing from their young starting pitchers. Melvin and catcher Bruce Maxwell were will- ing to give Mengden a pass on the Gattis homer as just being a hot hitter hitting a good pitch. The right-hander, just 23, allowed just two other runs, and in the first two games of the series, Jharel Cotton and Sean Manaea allowed one run between them. "It's awesome. It's fun to see," Mengden said. "We had a lot of fun down in Nashville together. To see the success of all the guys, especially the young guys, is awe- some. "I'm feeling more comfortable every time out there. (On Gattis) I thought I made a good pitch, and he went down and got it.
