Kaepernick is expected to kneel during the na- tional anthem at Mon- day night's season opener against the Los Angeles Rams at Levi's Stadium. Teammate Eric Reid joined him in that protest before their exhibition finale last Thursday in San Diego. It's unknown if any other teammates besides Reid might kneel with Kaeper- nick on Monday night. The Seahawks are ex- pected to show some form of team-wide demonstra- tion at their Sunday opener, and that's prompted the cancellation of a local rally Saturday in the City of Du- Pont. It's because of that pub- lic outrage that DuPont Mayor Mike Courts an- nounced the city's third- annual Seahawks rally on Saturday will be canceled. "While I respect the right of NFL players to express themselves, they must also respect the fact that their actions are hurt- ful to the community," Du- Pont Mayor Mike Courts said on the city's website. "As I said before, we need to find answers without violence or vitriol. So, un- til we as a community can find ways to talk and work together, the City of Du- Pont will not take sides by offering official support of the Seahawks, NFL, or in- dividual players." Kelly hasn't voiced any displeasure over the an- them protests, which have been mimicked at other sporting events and NFL games across the country, including by the Seattle Se- ahawks Jeremy Lane, the Denver Broncos' Brandon Marshall and women's soc- cer star Megan Rapinoe. "I think our team did a great job with it," Kelly said. "Our squad leaders had a meeting on the Sun- day (Aug. 28) after it hap- pened. Then we had a team meeting where Kap ad- dressed the team, and our players listened to Kap's side of it, and they under- stand and see where Kap is coming from." Kaepernick will start the season as Blaine Gab- bert's backup, a role re- versal Kaepernick experi- enced for only one game last season before going on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. Kaepernick last started a season as a backup in 2012, though he did relieve Alex Smith on occasion as a dual-threat, zone-read option. Kaepernick had 10 carries for 106 yards as the 49ers got off to a 3-0 start that season. • Anthony Davis will serve as the starting right guard and as their backup at either tackle spot, Kelly said. Davis played strictly righttacklefrom2010-14be- fore sitting out last season. • Wide receiver Torrey Smith fielded punts at the start of Friday's practice as a potential backup to Jer- emy Kerley, who the 49ers acquired last week. Smith hasn't returned a punt in five NFL seasons, and he fielded only one in college. • Nickel back Chris Da- vis (right hamstring) did not practice for a second consecutive day. Corner- back Keith Reaser (ankle) returned to practice. Safety Jaquiski Tartt appeared to tweak his hip in warmups. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 Now we just want to see that reflected in the win total at the end of the year." The win total is what this team ultimately will be judged on — as it should. The Raiders haven't made the playoffs or had a winning record since 2002 when they reached the Su- per Bowl. Only the Buffalo Bills have a longer playoff drought. If they achieve the high expectations laid upon them this season, it'll be tough to bring back all 24 coaches next year. That's part of the double-edged sword. Continuity is some- times simply a product of mediocrity. Raiders offensive line coach Mike Tice was the head coach in Minnesota for four years, going 32-33 with one playoff appear- ance, and said he kept his staff in tact most of that time. "We had some young coaches, and unless you're winning, they're not sought after," Tice said. "We were about a .500 team. But it's good when you get the same guys. You get a chance to build a staff." Nowhere is the continu- ity more important than on offense, especially with a young quarterback. Derek Carr remembers the roughly eight-month stretch in which he went from his first head coach Dennis Allen to interim coach Tony Sparano and then to Del Rio. "Now, it's nice to have the same system, same terminology," Carr, the Raiders quarterback, said. "Now we can grow off of that in the offseason." Former 49ers coach and current NFL Network ana- lyst Steve Mariucci consid- ers that one reason he ex- pects the Raiders to be a team on the rise. "He's lucky," Mariucci said in a recent phone con- versation about Carr, "be- cause, heck, remember Alex Smith over there in San Francisco. I think he had six different offensive coordinators in six or seven years. It was just a revolv- ing door. "That's so hard for any- body, even a veteran. The continuity now, with Jack Del Rio's staff, the way they practice, the system they run, the skill players are returning again — Mi- chael Crabtree and Amari Cooper. They're kind of growing up together." The benefits aren't just about Carr and the offense though. To contend, the Raiders will need their de- fense to show up all year — not just the second half of theseasonlikeitdidin2015. Raiders FROM PAGE 1 In fact, he's only been 30th in the standings for three weeks. The rest of the year, the 23-year-old rookie has been as low as 38th. Vying for spots in the Chase are some of the big- ger names in NASCAR, all of whom drive for top organizations. There are three spots available Sat- urday night — four if Bue- scher falls below 30th — and a first-time race win- ner would snag one of the open slots. The winless drivers on the cusp of taking a spot in the Chase are: Chase Elliott of Hendrick Mo- torsports, Austin Dillon of Richard Childress Rac- ing, Jamie McMurray of Chip Ganassi Racing and Ryan Newman, teammate to Dillon. All are ranked 14th or higher in the stand- ings, making Buescher an anomaly in a system in which consistency reigns supreme. But under the format adopted in 2014, NASCAR wanted to reward win- ning and made the Chase the prize for taking risks to win races. That's how Bue- scher got to victory lane at Pocono, where he didn't pit as weather closed in on the race track and inher- ited the lead in time for the race to be called. Those 12 laps led in Pennsylvania are the only laps Buescher has led this season. It's put him in posi- tion to strategize and race with a championship berth on the line, which he did last year in the Xfinity Series for Roush Fenway Racing. "It has been a lot busier than normal and talking a lot about the same thing ev- ery week," he said. "Trying to figure out the ideal sce- narios so that we can race into the Chase and then move through the Chase. There is a lot of antici- pation leading up to this weekend through the last several weeks. I love racing under the lights and I am excited about the race here at Richmond. I am pretty confident we are in a good spot right now." NASCAR FROM PAGE 1 perature at 90 degrees and the humidity above 50 percent. Monfils, now 0-13 against Djokovic, spent most of his news confer- ence defending his unusual approach and said he knew beforehand he might try it. On ESPN's telecast, John McEnroe blasted the 10th- seeded Frenchman for lack of effort. The Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd jeered him. "First question is, like, 'You're not competing?' ... Yes, I'm competing," Mon- fils said. "I made a sign to my coach (to) say, 'OK, I'm going to Plan B."' Djokovic had three set points while serving at 5-1, 40-love, and Monfils transi- tioned into something that at first blush appeared to be "tanking" — losing on purpose, for who knows what reason — but which he explained afterward was the tennis equivalent of Muhammad Ali's boxing "rope-a-dope," absorbing someone else's best shots and pretending to not be interested in attacking. Djokovic will try for his third U.S. Open champi- onship and 13th major tro- phy overall against Waw- rinka, whose first final at Flushing Meadows came via a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 vic- tory over No. 6 Kei Nishi- kori that lasted more than 3 hours and finished with the roof shut. Djokovic has won 19 of 23 previous meetings, but Wawrinka did win their 2015 French Open final for his second Grand Slam title. Djokovic entered Friday having enjoyed the easiest path to a major semifinal in the nearly half-century of the Open era.
