Haveyounoticedwhen- ever something terrible happens in our world it is always ratio- nalized as if there must have been a flaw in the person's up- bringing; lack of self- esteem is a favorite. Per- haps, we say alternatively, someone or something caused the malfunction to occur within the human be- ing, or there was a mental breakdown or…. For those who believe in the process of Evolution and the sur- vival of the fittest, why the excuse or surprise? One thing you may have noted is the absence of the word "sin" as an ex- planation of the moral di- lemma we in which we find ourselves…. Friends and neighbors tend to look down upon the archaic ex- planation that it is a sin- infected world that is the root cause of society's ills. Timothy Homp, son of a Lutheran Pastor in Antigo, Wisconsin, wrote of yet an- other school shooting at his local high school on prom night. Two students were wounded before local police fatally shot the gunman. The shooter was a neighbor who lived across the street from him. The shooter and mother were friendly neigh- bors. Nice people! Nice mother! Nice young man. Nothing that we knew gave any indication of why a friendly, creative, mu- sically gifted, fine young man would take a high- powered rifle to the school prom to shoot people. At this point, no one really knows why or what the motivation or cause might have been. Will a developing pro- file help to explain how and why this happened? Maybe. Maybe not. Or is this just another incomprehensible, sense- less act of violence that has left a fine young man dead, some schoolmates wounded, and many par- ents confused and griev- ing? Incomprehensible? No, not really. Sin isn't in- comprehensible. You won't hear it on the evening news, but the truth is, we live in a sin- ful world. Evidence of sin and its results are as close as our own skin. As shock- ing and upsetting as this is when it happens next door, it really ought not to come as a surprise. Sin has few limitations. Check the newspaper, TV news, or your own memory, and you will see it to be so. Last night's headline sin was committed in Antigo by a young man and neigh- bor we liked and trusted. Today and tomorrow it will be somewhere else, caused by someone else. The words of the hymn "Joy to the World" come to mind, especially, "Far as the curse is found" If the curse is wide- spread, and it is, then so must be the Christian com- munity's response to sin. It is time that we, as follow- ers of the most High God through Jesus Christ, pray for the healing of those in- jured through senseless vi- olence. That means we pray for the mother and father of the deceased shooter. Having celebrated the Savior's resurrection just a few weeks ago, we know the cure for sin and death is the Savior who lived, died and rose so death might be defeated. That's what the hymn-writer wants to convey: "He comes to make His bless- ings flow ... far as the curse is found." Jesus is the Source of all our blessings, of our for- giveness and peace and joy. Even in the face of evil we can sing: "Joy to the World! The Lord is come ... the Savior reigns ... with truth and grace ... and wonders of His love." And today, after the shooting, we believers have the joy and privilege of sharing this Good News ... far as the curse is found. InJuly1982theRev. Church spokesman Eric Hawkins said Monday that 30 missionaries in train- ing in Utah will instead go to other Russian-speaking missions in Eastern Europe. Forty-seven will still go to Russia as planned. The move marks the lat- est change made by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since Rus- sian President Vladimir Pu- tin signed the law earlier this summer that puts re- strictions on religious prac- tices. Previously, the faith an- nounced its missionaries there would be known as "volunteers" and would re- frain from proselytizing publicly to comply with the law. In early August, six mis- sionaries were detained for several hours by local Rus- sian police over visa issues. Three were sent to other countries. The U.S. Military Academy removed a video clip of the football team's postgame locker- room celebration after its upset win over Temple and is investigating whether a team prayer violated the re- ligious freedom of the play- ers. West Point spokesman Francis J. DeMaro Jr. said Thursday that a third party made allegations the video violated the First Amend- ment rights of some of the cadets. DeMaro said the video, which was posted on social media, was removed pending the inquiry, which was first reported by Army Times. Mikey Weinstein, pres- ident of the Military Re- ligious Freedom Founda- tion, said head coach Jeff Monken crossed the line after the game last Friday night in Philadelphia when he asked a staff assistant to conduct a prayer that ended with Jesus. "In this case, Coach Monken chose the wrong time, the wrong place and the wrong manner," Wein- stein said Thursday. "He can't tell anybody, put your hand on someone and let's pray. You can't do it, partic- ularly when you're the head coach (of a public school)." Weinstein said the video received 232,000 views and 2,000 Facebook shares. He said he started getting "in- undated" with phone calls, texts and emails, including 44 from West Point gradu- ates, 40 members of the academy faculty and staff, and six football players, prompting a call to West Point Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen. Weinstein, who said the video was replaced by an edited version, said he was expecting Monken to offer an apology later Thursday. "We assume that there's going to be an apology from the coach to the team," Weinstein said. "We are as- suming there's an admis- sion there was a misstep." Weinstein said Army ath- letic director Boo Corrigan was putting procedures in place with all coaches at the academy that will prevent a similar situation from hap- pening. Because of his rela- tionship with Caslen, Wein- stein said he does not plan to file a third-party inspec- tor general's complaint on the issue. The MRFF, which claims 47,300 clients, questioned a practice by the Air Force Academy football team late last year after players began kneeling in prayer prior to games.
