Bluegrass fundraiser a success More than 350 people gathered June 16 at Cedar Crest Vineyards & Win- ery in Manton to raise funds for music and arts education for the children of Manton. With hundreds of busi- ness and individual spon- sor donations from Northern California, the Manton Music & Arts (MMA) council will be able to support the 2012/2013 music instruc- tion to start in September this year. TriCounties Bank was the featured sponsor this year and provided a ban- ner to be used every year including the Bluegrass on the Mountain logo, created by Angie Skill- man, as well as the new, official Manton logo pro- vided by the Tehama County Branding Project. The young musicians who performed were chil- dren from Manton (ages 5 to 13), taught by Kathryn Busey; Matthew Song- maker and band, The Mountain Messengers, from Shingletown; and Jessica Van Piper from Red Bluff. band, Acoustic West, included accomplished musicians from District 6 California State Old Time Fiddlers Association, which also provided the sound equipment. Both Songmaker and The headline Van Piper were said to be impressive additions to this event and inspiring to the Manton students. VanPiper is a 14-year-old student and songwriter from Red Bluff and per- forms vocals, guitar and ukulele. Extra officers were on duty patrolling areas frequented by motorcyclists and where motorcycle crashes occur. Another enforcement period is scheduled for sometime in July. After ten years of steadily increasing motorcycle fatali- ties in California, increasing 175 percent from 204 killed in 1998 to 560 killed in 2008, the trend has changed. Two con- secutive years of fewer motorcycle fatalities — 394 in 2009 and 352 in 2010 — have resulted in a 37 percent decrease since the 2008 peak. This is positive trend that the depart- ment would like to see continue. The Red Bluff Police Department reminds all motorists to always be alert and watch out for motorcycles, especial- ly when turning and changing lanes. fewer improperly licensed riders. In 2008, 62.7 percent of motorcycle operators killed under age 25 were not properly licensed. In 2009, that sta- tistic fell to only 45.5 percent. Riders, young and old, are encouraged to be properly licensed and to seek training and safety information. Some of the reduction in riders killed can be attributed to and plays multiple instru- ments, including fiddle, guitar and mandolin. The fundraiser is in its 5th year and the over- whelming support from the Manton Community, individuals from sur- rounding counties, and area businesses was a welcome surprise to the newly formed MMA council. This was the first year the event was held outside of the Manton School and allowed for a larger audience. "On behalf of the Manton Music & Arts council, we would like to thank all attendees and sponsors of the event. This was our first year holding the event outside, which had its challenges, but we had great feed- back, and we plan to make next year's event even better with all that we learned this year, " said MMA vice president, *WILL PAY CASH FOR JUNK CARS* Quality Used Parts for Less Sat. 11-3 • Closed Sun. & Mon. 650 Main St., Red Bluff Tues.-Fri. 10:30-5:30 Hand Tooled Leather Trucker's Wallet 530 528-2723 824-2880 10 ACRES OF 22521 Capay Road, Corning CA. 96021 Mon-Fri 8am-5pm • Sat. 9am-2pm Highway 99W & Capay Road (Halfway between Corning & Orland) Auto Recycling Inc. The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) has published numerous stud- ies on the benefits of music and arts education, showing that children, adolescents, and college students who learn music score higher on verbal and math exams as well as higher on SAT scores than those without any music or arts education. Based on this important research, many communi- ty members and parents of Manton children formed the music pro- gram to enhance their education. The MMA council was formed to continue fundraising to keep music and arts education in schools and to make a statement to state and federal government that the education system needs more than just basic skills teaching, even in small schools and com- munities. MMA hopes to establish a model organi- zation for other rural communities where edu- cation is less than ade- quate and keep these communities motivated to ensure their children have all the opportunities issued to children of larg- er cities and better cir- cumstances. been reversed, though there is more that everyone can do to save more lives," said California Office of Traffic Safety Director Christopher Murphy. "The people who sponsor and attend this event are taxpayers who support music and arts education along with all other programs public schools and communities in our country should share, regardless of size or location." • Sullen 648 Main St. Downtown Red Bluff TATTOO (530) 528-8288 FIRST LOVE Fresh line of Accessories & Clothing • Sailor Jerry New for Spring! • Fox • Metal Mulisha • Sourpuss and more! • Rebel8 Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Red Bluff Police offers the following motorcycle safety tips for motorists: •Always make a visual check for motorcycles by check- ing mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic and at intersections • Always signal your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic • Don't be fooled by a flashing turn signal on a motor- cycle- motorcycle signals are often not self-canceling and riders sometimes forget to turn them off. Wait to be sure the motorcycle is going to turn before you proceed • Allow more following distance, three or four seconds, when behind a motorcycle so the motorcyclist has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emergency. And don't tail- gate. In dry conditions, motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars. • Never drive while distracted. Motorcyclists can increase their safety by: • Positioning themselves in the lane where they will be most visible to other drivers. • Never driving while impaired. • Wearing a DOT-compliant helmet • Using the motorcycle's turn signals; it is California law. • Combining hand signals and turn signals to draw more attention to themselves • Avoiding riding in poor weather conditions • Wearing brightly colored protective gear • Using reflective tape and stickers to increase conspicu- ity The message to all drivers and motorcyclists is: Help to share in the responsibility and do your part by safely shar- ing the road.
