When I sat down to watch it, I didn't expect to love it in the same way that I loved the original, which was the first film I remember seeing in the theater. Consequently, I did not hate the film's existence and laughed more than few times. There are two doctors who are definitely not intended to resemble in any way Dr. Stantz and Dr. Spangler because there was definitely NOT any ghostbusting going on in New York City in 1984, or any other time but right now. The first is Dr. Abby Yates (Kristen Wiig), up for tenure at Columbia University and dressing herself in the dark. The second is Dr. Erin Gilbert (Melissa McCarthy, still not ever as likeable as she is trying to be). Just as the crusty old dean wanders by to sneer at Abby, she finds out a book she co-wrote about the existence of ghosts has appeared online. Apparently, this will tank her tenure because she is unable to think of any of the wonderfully convincing lies I could easily come up with in the span of writing this sentence. In the interest of advancing the plot, Abby goes to see Erin and makes the first of an endless series of "jokes" about wonton soup. No, it's not that funny in the movie, either. Abby also gets to meet Dr. Jillian Holzmann (Kate McKinnon), who is absolutely NOT the Venkman. Through movie logic, the only way to kill the book and save Abby's tenure is for her to join Erin and Jillian for some ghostbusting. They hop in a taxi and speed off to a haunting while my ears begin to bleed from the dulcet tones that comprise the remake of a song that didn't need to be remade. The ghost, much less scary then the dead librarian in the original, slimes Abby, who then appears in a video that goes viral. Aside: I am now convinced that the writer and director have no idea how the Internet works, or how many people post videos of "real" ghosts online. The odds that a single video posted would immediately catch on and make the news that quickly are exceedingly low. End aside. The video gets Abby fired, which is not how tenure -track positions work, but okay. Now is a good time to get the remaining members of the new team into place. Patty Tolan (the amazing Leslie Jones), who is nothing at all like the character of Winston Zeddmore, and male actor/model/secretary Kevin (Chris Hemsworth) are introduced in short order. This was not the egregiously awful catastrophe it could easily have been, but I do wish Director Paul Feig had made the direct sequel, rather than a complete reboot. His vision reduced the stars I loved as a child to phoning in their cameos to avoid a lawsuit. Yes, Bill Murray showed up, but I could tell he was giving everyone the middle finger when he wasn't on camera. Also, someone get Kate McKinnon to call me. I've acquired an isolated farmhouse and I want her to join me for the Misery remake I'm working on. Now showing at Patriot 14 + IMAX. HEATHER GRIFFITHS, Contributing Writer. COMMENTS?
