That is a completely true statement, but probably not in the way you might think I meant it. So, if you're nodding and agreeing, hang on for a minute. We've probably all had someone tell us they don't go to church because it's full of hypocrites. What they usually mean is they won't go because churches are full of people who don't live what they preach and teach. Here's the kicker: If that's what makes you a hypocrite — I am one. And in one way or another, so are most of the people I know. As a matter of fact, as hard as I try, and as much as I want to live like the Jesus whose name I carry, I can't. As much as I want to do the things that are right and put away the things that are not, I don't. I'm human. I'm imperfect. And I fail God to the point of being undeserving of anything good every single day. Maybe not the same way each time, but I fail Him nonetheless. And just to be clear — that's WHY I go to church. Time after time, I walk through those doors admitting I don't have it all together. I take a seat in the pews or chairs or whatever in the hope I'll hear a song or a message or an encouraging comment that gives me the strength to walk out and try again. Like an athlete who submits to strong coaching, I come to church to be reminded I can do better. To hear an interpretation from a timeless text that I can be more, and that I can make a difference. As we all endure the seemingly endless barrage of political advertisements, editorials and street-corner punditry, it's easy to see there is no shortage of opinions — or at the very least — people sharing someone's opinion. But more than the need for validation from social media acquaintances who agree with me or mistakenly think I am doing better than I really am, I need a nudge from the creator of this universe that steers me back on course. Someone who will tell me the truth about what's good, what's not and why. And just like a mother or father who teaches their children how to do well while giving them the room they need to find out why, that's what I get when I walk into church. What does that have to do with programming Christian radio stations? Frankly, everything. It's important we realize that every song choice, every word we speak between the songs, every little thing we do all day long has the potential of falling on the ears of someone just like me — just like us. We are all surrounded by people who want to do better in life. Whether in how we treat ourselves and others, how we lead and guide our families, or how we handle relationships on any level, we just want to do better. Doing anything less than trying to help would be, well ... hypocritical. DAN DEBRULER WCLN Station Manager, Contributing Writer. COMMENTS? Editor@ upandcomingweekly.com. 910.484.6200
