The Collbran, Colorado, resident helped his cause significantly on Monday when he scored 87 points on Rocky Mountain Ro- deo's Captain Crunch. All he needs is another eight- second ride on Tuesday and he will be making plans to be back here for the finals next weekend. Wallace is currently 13th in the world standings and no matter what happens on Tuesday, his ride on Mon- day should get him a good check from the first round of competition. There was a big lead change in the steer wres- tling during Monday morn- ing slack. Billy Bugenig, from Ferndale, Calif., nod- ded his head, let the steer amble out in front of him for 30 feet, rode alongside the steer and did every- thing just right to stop the clock in 5.9 seconds. The former NFR qualifier was so excited he threw his hat in the air. The arena record here is 5.1 seconds, set by Rick Myhre in 2004. Lisa Lockhart, last year's champion here, is the new overall leader in the bar- rel racing after taking her horse Louie around the pattern in 17.72 seconds. That probably won't place in the second round, but, because of her first round performance, she moved to the top of the board with a total time of 35.43 seconds. The fourth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo starts at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday where all of the contestants will be competing in the second round. Rodeo FROM PAGE 1 as he blasted a 345-yard drive off the first tee in the Long Drive Competition and made his way around the course. He looks ready to go, and he will find out Thursday what kind of traction he has. McIlroy was asked to describe his season in one word, and after some thought, settled on "neu- tral." That's another way of saying he has been spin- ning his wheels. "I feel there's been times where I got a little bit of momentum, and then sort of got set back a little bit," he said. "It's been a little stop-start in a way. But it's hard. I'm trying to stay as positive as I can. I feel like I am positive because my game is in good shape. But I guess just maybe run- ning out of patience a lit- tle bit and trying to make it happen. "I don't know if there's one word to describe this year," he said. "But I think you get a sense of how I've felt about the year and try- ing to get better and trying to get my name in the mix, and hopefully I can do that this week." His record in the PGA Championship is in his fa- vor. McIlroy has won the Wanamaker Trophy twice in the last four years, and he has three other fin- ishes in the top 10. Even though he grew up in Northern Ireland, the American brand of golf suits him best. Baltusrol is big, and likely will be soft with the overnight rain, the steamy heat and the threat of thun- derstorms. PGA FROM PAGE 1 By Cam Inman BayAreaNewsGroup No strangers to quar- terback competitions, the 49ers will have that and morewhentheyopentrain- ing camp Saturday. Here is alookatsomecompetitions on offense: RIGHT TACKLE Anthony Davis' name returns to the mix — with an asterisk — after he announced Mon- day he's finally applying for reinstatement from the reserve/retired list. Do the 49ers indeed welcome him back after a year hiatus (or 1 ½ years, as he missed the 2015offseasonprogram),or do they trade him, assum- ing he indeed is reinstated? Either way, the right tackle position has been a weak link the past two seasons on an offensive line that was the NFL's best as recently as 2012. Erik Pears struggled, es- pecially early on, in the 14 starts last season before yielding to then-rookie Trent Brown for the final two starts. Pears' experience (10 years) and history with new offensive coordina- tor Curtis Modkins could help him. Brown (6-foot- 8, 355 pounds) must show up in better shape to merit a promotion, which isn't a sure thing for a 2015 sev- enth-round pick. LIKELY WEEK 1 STARTER Pears TIGHT END Both Garrett Celek and Vance McDon- ald surely will garner a lot of time together in two tight-end sets. Both are coming off career years. Both have durability ques- tions. Neither is a touch- down machine, with three apiece for their career (all from last season). Blake Bell and converted fullback Bruce Miller also are in the mix, though likely for a No. 3 role, while Je'Ron Hamm seemed to show more than Busta An- derson in spring workouts. LIKELY WEEK 1 STARTER Celek NO. 2 WIDE RECEIVER Tor- rey Smith is poised to as- sume (thrive?) as the No. 1 receiver, seeing how An- quan Boldin's three-year term hasn't led to an in- vitation back for Year 4. But who will complement Smith? Quinton Patton (1 TD in 36 career catches) is no lock to assume the No. 2 role, and it will be worth studying how his overzeal- ous approach will mesh with Chip Kelly's ideals. Je- rome Simpson has a great opportunity to revive his career. Bruce Ellington figures to see a lot of reps, especially from the slot, but a slew of unproven op- tions abound on this young corps. This is an intriguing (in a freeway-rubber- necker way) battle for roster spots, so don't rule out Dres Anderson, DeAn- drew White, Aaron Bur- bridge, DiAndre Camp- bell, Devon Cajuste and undrafted Cal product Bryce Treggs, who exclled in the offseason as a sur- prise gem, though not yet as a No. 2 receiver. LIKELY WEEK 1 STARTER Ellington (and Rogers in three-receiver sets), along with Smith. 49ERS Kap, Gabbert not only ones vying to start Scoreboard MLB NATIONALLEAGUE WEST DIVISION W L Pct GB Giants 58 41 .586 _ Los Angeles 56 44 .560 21/2 Colorado 47 52 .475 11 San Diego 43 57 .430 151/2 Arizona 41 58 .414 17 CENTRAL DIVISION W L Pct GB Chicago 59 39 .602 _ St. Louis 52 46 .531 7 Pittsburgh 51 47 .520 8 Milwaukee 42 55 .433 161/2 Cincinnati 39 60 .394 201/2 EAST DIVISION W L Pct GB Washington 58 41 .586 _ New York 52 45 .536 5 Miami 53 46 .535 5 Philadelphia 46 55 .455 13 Atlanta 33 66 .333 25 Monday's games Baltimore 3, Colorado 2, 10 innings Toronto 4, San Diego 2 Philadelphia 4, Miami 0 St. Louis at N.Y.
