ByJuliePace and Brian Slodysko The Associated Press WASHINGTON After fren- zied, final decision making, Donald Trump announced Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate Friday, adding an experienced pol- itician with deep Washing- ton connections to the Re- publican presidential ticket. Trump's pick was aimed in part at easing some Re- publicans' concerns about histemperamentandlackof political experience. Pence spent six years in Congress before being elected gov- ernor and his demeanor is as calm as Trump's is fiery. While some conservatives are skeptical of Trump's po- litical leanings, Pence has been a stalwart ally on so- cial issues. Yet Pence is largely un- known to many Americans. And his solidly conventional political background runs counter to Trump's anti-es- tablishment mantra. The two men scheduled a news conference for Sat- urday in New York to pres- ent themselves to America as the Republican team that will take on Hillary Clinton and her Democratic run- ning mate in November. The duo will head to Cleve- land next week for the Re- publican National Conven- tion. As Pence arrived for a private meeting with Trump Friday, he told re- porters he "couldn't be more happy for the oppor- tunity to run with and serve with the next president of the United States." In choosing Pence, Trump appears to be look- ing past their numerous policy differences. The gov- ernor has been a longtime advocate of trade deals such as NAFTA and the Trans Pacific Partnership, both of which Trump aggres- sively opposes. Pence also has been critical of Trump's proposed temporary ban on foreign Muslims enter- ing the United States, call- ing the idea "offensive and unconstitutional." The reaction to the Pence choice from Republican of- ficials was overwhelmingly positive — no small feat for Trump given how polar- izing he's been within his own party. "It was a pick that clearly shows he is pivoting to the general election," said GOP chairman Reince Priebus, who was in the midst of an interview with The Associ- ated Press when Trump an- nounced his decision. "He is choosing a person who has the experience inside and outside Washington, Chris- tian conservative, very dif- ferent style that I think shows a lot of maturity." Pence, a staunchly con- servative 57-year-old, served six terms in Congress be- fore being elected governor and could help Trump navi- gate Capitol Hill. He is well- regarded by evangelical Christians, particularly af- ter signing a law that critics said would allow businesses to deny service to gay peo- ple for religious reasons. Trump spent weeks weighing vice presidential contenders, including for- mer House Speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and only zeroed in on Pence in recent days. In fact, the se- lection process appeared on the verge of sliding out of control in the final hours before the announcement, sparking speculation that Trump might be changing his mind. Word that Pence would be joining the Republican ticket began trickling out in news reports Thursday be- fore Trump had made a fi- nal decision or called Pence to offer him the job, accord- ing to a Republican familiar with the situation. 2016 CAMPAIGN TrumptapsIndiana'sPenceforVPslot MICHAELCONROY—THEASSOCIATEDPRESSFILE Indiana Gov. By Suzan Fraser and Dominique Soguel The Associated Press ANKARA, TURKEY Turk- ish officials said Saturday morning the government had appeared to have re- pelled an attempted mili- tary coup following a night of explosions, air battles and gunfire across the cap- ital that left at least 17 dead, according to state-run me- dia. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in an interview over FaceTime with the CNN Turk station, dis- missed the military action as "an attempt at an upris- ing by a minority within our armed forces." His of- fice declined to disclose his whereabouts, saying only that he was in a secure lo- cation. Turks took to the streets of cities across the coun- try waving national flags throughout the attempted coup to show their support for the government. By Saturday morning, a top Turkish official said the coup attempt appeared to have been repelled. The senior official told The As- sociated Press that all gov- ernment officials were in charge of their offices. The official requested anonym- ity because of the sensitiv- ity of the issue. The chaos, included a re- ported bomb explosion at the parliament, capped a period of political turmoil in Turkey blamed on Erdo- gan's increasingly authori- tarian rule, which has in- cluded a government shake up and a crackdown on dis- sidents and opposition me- dia. Critics also have blamed Erdogan for taking a hard line on Turkey's Kurdish rebels after the collapse of peace efforts, leading to deadly clashes that have in- creased military casualties. The coup attempt began late Friday, with a state- ment from the military say- ing it had seized control "to reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms, to en- sure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for law and order to be reinstated." Fighter jets buzzed over- head, gunfire erupted out- side military headquar- ters and vehicles blocked two major bridges in Istan- bul. Soldiers blocked entry to Istanbul's main Ataturk Airport, where four tanks were stationed, according to the private Dogan news agency. But the military did not appear unified, with top commanders taking to tele- vision to condemn the ac- tion and order troops back to their barracks. MIDDLE EAST Turkish officials say coup attempt against government appears to have failed By Colleen Barry and Lori Hinnant The Associated Press NICE, FRANCE France called up thousands of re- serve security forces Fri- day as authorities tried to determine why a Tuni- sian deliveryman known only to be a petty criminal took the wheel of a 19-ton truck and plunged through a terrified seaside crowd on Bastille Day, leaving 84 people dead and more than 200 wounded. Witnesses described how Mohamed Bouhlel barreled his truck in a zig- zag path down a crowded Nice promenade, aiming directly for children, for mothers pushing strollers and for families cowering behind plastic benches. President Francois Hol- lande extended a national state of emergency that stretched back to the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris that killed 130 people and was claimed by the Islamic State group. The state of emergency had been due to be scaled back but instead was ex- tended another three months. The government tapped its operational re- serve of 25,000 — com- posed mainly of ex-mili- tary or former gendarmes — to relieve its tired offi- cers, stretched by month after month of state-of- emergency policing. Hollande said the attack was "undeniably terrorist in nature," but prosecutors said the 31-year-old driver who lived in Nice wasn't known to intelligence ser- vices. No group claimed re- sponsibility for Thursday night's slaughter of tour- ists and locals packing the upscale seafront, where an estimated 30,000 had just watched a Bastille Day fireworks show. They fanned out to en- joy nighttime street art- ists, arcade games and food stalls or strolls back to their hotels beside the gentle Mediterranean tide. Then Bouhlel drove his truck into the sidewalk and turned a celebration into a terrifying dash for survival. Among the dead were immigrants and tourists from many nations, in- cluding Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Germany, Rus- sia, Ukraine, Switzerland and the United States.
