Duringmyfirstmission trip to Fiji I encountered Nani, a village elder and a Hindu in her eighties who suffered mi- graines ev- ery day. I prayed for her daily and the Lord would heal it. The trou- ble is, she would have an- other the next morning. I asked her if she would like to receive Jesus as her Lord after one heal- ing. "No," she said, "I have been following the Hindu goddesses for too long to give them up now." I did not challenge her, but an- other day — moved by the Holy Spirit — I dared say, "Nani, I think those Hindu goddesses are trying to scare you from Jesus; I think if you accept Jesus before I pray the head- aches will not come back." She laughed and prayed with me to make Jesus her new Lord. I prayed and headache went away; she never had another. The Great Commis- sion is for every person who claims Christ. We are commissioned to acknowl- edge the Lord's author- ity to send each of us into every nook and cranny of the His world, baptizing those who hunger for au- thentic life, share with one another all we have been taught, and praise Him as One who presently serves and cares for us and all. The good news — for those who cannot imag- ine life without shop- ping malls and hot water — is that includes wher- ever we live. Everyone is called, some into the wild areas of New Guinea, but most to their neigh- borhood grocery parks, back fence neighbors, and even the coffee hour of their own churches. Study after study demon- strates most people meet the Lord in the company of close friends and rela- tions; I have had the per- sonal pleasure of leading a half dozen or so former high school classmates to meet my King, and a good many more relatives, friends, and professional colleagues. It is not — by the way — about knowing your Bible well enough to instruct or even explain. It is about sharing and liv- ing your personal story; you may be the only Bi- ble your friends will ever meet until they meet — by His grace and your faith- fulness — the One who caused all scripture to be written. The catch is this: God says in the Old Testament — especially in Isaiah 59, Jeremiah 31, and Joel 2 — that His Word will be written on our hearts in the latter days. That means we have no excuse for bailing by feigning ig- norance of Who He is and what He intends. Our Abba calls us responsible for being a walking adver- tisement for His love and mercy in Isaiah 58, Micah 6:8, and multiple other OT places. The New Testa- ment is shot through and through with the consis- tent message we are ex- pected to be the image of God and not be content to be aware of it. That makes Great Commission con- tinuing education as im- portant as it is good for all of us. Perspectives comes to Northern California in August; classes begin in Chico on the 8th and in Redding the 9th. The course runs fifteen weeks, one night weekly and a different teacher each week. (Mine is #11 the one on cross cultural minis- try.) The best bet for info on costs and locations is the web site, www.per- spectives.org. I know from experience in our frac- tured and compartmen- talized world every oppor- tunity to share the Gospel becomes a kind of cross cultural ministry, whether across the sea or across the street. And there is no feeling on earth like the thrill of knowing a new heavenly life has be- gun because I stepped up to the plate in all my fear and trembling. This course engages us where we live for that purpose. My favorite evange- lism story is about my own cousin-by-marriage, Bruce. He brought his family to visit mine one weekend — not an un- usual thing — and asked to take a walk with me — an unusual thing. He re- vealed he had cancer, and that he had never until that moment needed any- thing his own gifts and talents could not provide; certainly not God. "But you are different. I have seen you go through a lot; sometimes you are visibly strong and sometimes not so much, but you always seem to find peace. I'm here because I need what you have got." I led him to the Lord that evening. Bruce did not put me on a pedestal, nor do I de- serve to be there. He saw my warts, but he also saw something more than me — the visible light of Christ. That light is what we bring to the Great Commission table; Per- spectives shows us how to more easily let it shine. NEIGHBORHOOD FULL GOSPEL Church to offer vacation bible school The Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY Mor- mon missionaries will re- main in Russia despite the country's new anti-terror- ism law, which will put greater restrictions on re- ligious work starting later this month. In a statement issued Friday, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said that missionaries will respect a measure that Russian President Vladi- mir Putin signed into law this week. "The church will honor, sustain and obey the law," the church said. "The church will further study and analyze the law and its impact as it goes into effect." Starting July 20, mis- sionary workers will be working under more strin- gent rules. They include a requirement that mission- ary work be done by people affiliated with registered organizations. Mission- aries and organizations caught praying and dis- seminating materials in private residences could be subject to fines. They range from $780 per missionary and $15,500 for an organi- zation. Furthermore, religious work can only be done in houses of worship and other related religious sites. Critics say this aspect is way too restrictive. It would mean no Mormons could share their faith on- line or in a home to which they have been invited. Julie Emmons, 20, came back to her Elk Grove, Cal- ifornia, home two weeks ago after finishing her mission in the Mormon Church's Russia Moscow Mission. According to her, Russian Mormons reg- ularly assist missionar- ies and have them over to their homes to teach peo- ple about the faith. While in Russia, she and other missionaries carried "a testimony" at all times. A testimony is paperwork that includes a copy of a passport and information about what the missionary is doing. More than 22,700 mem- bers of the Mormon church reside in Russia, according to the LDS' news website. Matt Martinich, an inde- pendent LDS researcher and project manager of The Cumorah Foundation, said Russia has historically put up obstacles for mis- sionaries since the church gained recognition in 1991. They include making it dif- ficult to get building per- mits, bring in missionaries and get visas. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom condemned the law Friday, saying it is a way to enact "sweeping powers to curtail civil lib- erties." Groups in other reli- gious communities such as Muslims and Jehovah's Witnesses also must reg- ister to do religious work. The law calls for height- ened telephone and social media surveillance.
