Ontheair runner-uptoMickelsonat Muirfield in 2013, was one shot behind. Soren Kjeld- sen and Keegan Brad- ley each shot 68 and were three shots behind. The top 14 players going into the weekend all played Friday morning. Of the 26 players still under par, only four of them played in the afternoon. The nature of links golf, and this championship, is getting the good side of the tee times. Mickelson was soaked when he walked off the course, though he managed to get in eight holes before the rain ar- rived. On the ninth hole, he had his caddie hold the umbrella over his ball on a 10-foot par putt, walking away at the last minute to watch his boss roll in into the cup, like he's been do- ing all week. Jordan Spieth? He was lucky to still be playing. Spieth battled through the worst of the elements to play the final six holes in even par for a 75 to finish at 4-over 146. Two hours before he finished, that looked as if it would earn him a trip back to Texas. Instead, he made the cut on the number. "It's tough when we all realize before we go out that you're kind of what would be the bad end of the draw before you even play your second round," Spieth said. Then again, he wasn't sure it mattered the way he was playing. "But at 4-over par, my game is not major cham- pionship-winning caliber those first two rounds," he said. "It just made it pretty interesting and actually somewhat nervous on the last five, six holes because I'd really like to play the weekend." McIlroy got within five shots of the lead until the weather and a few bad shots gobbled him up, and the four-time major cham- pion dropped four shots in five holes. He had to settle for an even-par 71 and was eight shots behind, along with U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson (69). Jason Day, the world's No. 1 player, had a 70 and was among three players who broke par in the af- ternoon. "I felt like I shot a low- career round out there to- day with just how tough the conditions were," Day said. Mickelson made his first bogey when he pulled an iron off the tee into the rough, missing a gorse bush by about two paces. He dropped another shot on the 15th when he pulled his drive into the rough and couldn't reach the green. Those were the mistakes, offset by a 25- foot birdie putt on the 14th hole when he played his tee shot off the back side of a bunker and let it feed to- ward the hole. He looked like a links specialist the way he used the ground. Then again, his name is on the silver claret jug for a reason. And he wouldn't mind seeing it there again. "I don't feel the pres- sure like probably a lot of players do to try to win the claret jug because I've already won it," he said. "The desire to capture that claret jug puts a lot of pres- sure on. The fact I've done it relieves some of that. I would love to add to it, but having already done that was big." Only two other players have started a major with rounds of 63-69. One was Raymond Floyd, who went on to a wire-to-wire victory at Southern Hills in the 1982 PGA Championship. The other was Greg Nor- man, who shot 78 in the fi- nal round of the 1996 Mas- ters and lost a six-shot lead. Open FROM PAGE 1 Security had already been reinforced at the Tour this month, with France in a state of emergency since the Paris attacks last No- vember. The three-week race is protected by an unprecedented force of 23,000 police officers, in- cluding SWAT-like inter- vention squads, while se- curity guards perform bag checks and pat downs at the start and finish of ev- ery stage. Eric Luzet, the police li- aison officer to the Tour, told The Associated Press that extra security mea- sures were implemented overnight, with 600 po- lice officers overseeing the stage. Mollema, who was in- volved in a crash with Froome inside the last ki- lometer on Mont Ventoux on Thursday, when a TV motorbike was forced to stop on the road because of fan congestion, said his "thoughts are with the peo- ple in Nice." Froome was awarded the same time as Mol- lema, a decision that left Mollema unhappy. But the Dutch rider put his rivalry with Froome aside, and had a strong ride on the windy and narrow roads in the picturesque Gorges de l'Ardeche. Mollema was 1:54 behind Dumoulin, while Richie Porte, Tejay Van Garderen and Romain Bardet all lost ground to Froome. Van Garderen sits in sixth place, 3:19 back, with Porte 4:27 behind. France FROM PAGE 1 the blessing of a single Su- preme Court justice, in this case Ruth Bader Ginsburg — only to have the whole court later refuse to hear the case. That could allow the suspension to fall at a more inconvenient time in the season, perhaps includ- ing the playoffs. "This decision was made in the interest of certainty and planning for Tom prior to the New England Patri- ots season," the NFL Play- ers Association said in a statement Friday. The union said it was still considering whether to seek on its own a Su- preme Court ruling that would limit Commissioner Roger Goodell's authority to punish players. Drop- ping the case now would leave in place what the union called this week a "broken system that must be fixed." But even if the union fights on, Brady would still sit out the first four games of the season, when the Pa- triots face the Cardinals, Dolphins, Texans and Bills. Backup Jimmy Garoppolo, who has spent the last two years as the backup, is ex- pected to start for New England instead. Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who has split with longtime league allies over the punishment, renewed his complaint that the sus- pension was "unprece- dented, unjust and unrea- sonable." "Unfortunately, this stopped being about air pressure a long time ago," he said in a statement . "This entire process has indelibly taken a toll on our organization, our fans and most importantly, Tom Brady. His reluctant decision to stop pursuing further action and to put this situation behind him is what he feels is best for the team in preparation for this season and is fully sup- ported by me and our en- tire organization." Brady is eligible to re- turn in Week 5, when New England visits the Cleve- land Browns. Despite the suspension, the Patriots re- main overwhelming favor- ites to win the AFC East for the 13th time in 14 seasons. Brady FROM PAGE 1 all-time great careers: 93 wins, four series cham- pionships and more than $150 million in winnings. But he is the obvious choice to pinch-drive in the No. 88 Chevrolet for Earn- hardt, his former Hendrick Motorsports teammate, at one of his favorite tracks. Gordon won the last of his record five Brickyard 400 victories in 2014. "He's not a bad person to think about to put in the car," Hendrick general manager Doug Duchardt said Friday. Gordon, who has called NASCAR races for Fox Sports this season and expressed interest in re- placing the departed Mi- chael Strahan as Kelly Ri- pa's new "Live" co-host, tweeted he was in France this weekend, which ruled him out for a potential re- turn at New Hampshire. Alex Bowman will drive the 88 on Sunday. If Gordon races next weekend, his fellow driv- ers certainly don't expect any rust from the former champ. "Just because you go to the nude beach for a cou- ple of months doesn't mean you don't know how to put your underwear back on," Ryan Newman said. Duchardt said a deci- sion on the Brickyard will likely be made on Wednes- day. He did not say if Gor- don would continue to drive in the 88 — not his famed No. 24 now helmed by Chase Elliott — should Earnhardt remain out be- yond the Brickyard. Duch- ardt could not say if Earn- hardt actually had a con- cussion and declined to speculate on when he might return. "When Dale is ready, that's his car to get back into," he said. Earnhardt missed two races in 2012 when it was determined he had suf- fered two concussions in six weeks. Earnhardt was involved in a 22-car wreck in Daytona this month and also wrecked last month at Michigan International Speedway.
