JULY 13-19, 2016 UCW 23 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM At Fayetteville Technical Community College, the Work-Based Learning Program has been successful in intern placement with partnerships developed for on-the-job training experience. More than 300 FTCC students completed internships during the 2015-2016 academic year. Employers throughout the community have served students in all academic areas including, but not limited to, medical office administration, paralegal technology/diploma and culinary arts. Work-based learning is a partnership involving the employer, the student and the college, where everyone involved wins. FTCC offers the work-based learning experience in more than 50 programs of study. These programs are designed to enhance knowledge of the field as well as the ability to apply classroom learning in the workplace. The programs focus on developing a professional work ethic, work-place skills, résumés and employer contacts. The program offers each student the opportunity to collaborate and network with individuals from careers related to programs of study. Some FTCC students get hired directly by the employers upon completion of the internship, and some are hired while they are still completing their internship. During the internship, students are advised by an FTCC faculty coordinator and an on-the-job supervisor. This partnership builds the bridge between the college student and the hired graduate. The faculty coordinator is the specialist in the career area at the college level, whereas the supervisor is the professional expert at the job. The student maintains contact with both parties throughout the internship experience. This relationship allows students to ask questions when in doubt and encourages them to become successful in the career of their choice. The work-based learning office is located at the Fayetteville campus of FTCC inside Cumberland Hall at Room 365. The summer office hours are Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Prospective students and employers are encouraged to call, e-mail or stop by and investigate the opportunities that the work- based learning experience offers. For more information, call 678-8268 or e-mail nunneryj@ faytechcc.edu. Registration for fall semester is currently under way, with fall classes beginning Monday, Aug. 15. FTCC offers more than 200 programs of study leading to the award of associate degree, certificate or diploma. Many programs are offered 100 percent online for students who may benefit from this convenience, and face-to-face courses are available for students who desire the more traditional classroom setting. Visit the FTCC campuses located in Fayetteville and Spring Lake, or visit the Fort Bragg Training and Education Center, conveniently located at Fort Bragg, for the convenience of military students.
