The quilt was placed in Council Chamber for display purposes and All-America City cupcakes were served. After spending a day at City Hall and being displayed during the City of Fayetteville's Citizens' Academy graduation, the quilt traveled to each of the partners involved in Fayetteville's All-America City award application to the National Civic League. On June 6, the quilt made its rounds with the Cumberland County Schools, featured in the award application for its Reading Rocks! literacy initiative. The quilt toured the three schools that raised the most money for the Reading Rocks! walk-a-thon in their particular school levels: Eastover-Central Elementary School, Max Abbott Middle School, and Cape Fear High School. On June 7, the Fayetteville-Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce placed the quilt on display at their beautiful facility, located next to Highland Presbyterian Church on Hay Street. On June 8, the Fayetteville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau displayed the quilt at the Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum on Franklin Street. continued next page City Named Tree City USA for 10th Year In a Row The City of Fayetteville has been named a Tree City USA for the 10th year in a row by the Arbor Day Foundation. The award recognizes cities nationally for their commitment to community forestry. Municipalities must meet four standards to gain the distinction: having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. The City met the criteria by having members of the Joint Appearance Committee serve on a tree board, enforcing a tree ordinance for public land and by Parks & Recreation staff planting, pruning, irrigating and fertilizing trees. Parks & Recreation also selects the trees, making sure they grow well in Fayetteville. Fayetteville place a high priority on planting and caring for trees, one of our nation's most beautiful resources," said John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Trees shade our homes and add beauty to our neighborhoods, and they also provide many and citizens for providing vital care for its urban forest." The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
