Readers Chime In On the Not So Great Generation OPINION Janice, darker light. Your grandparents worked in factories, grew up during the Depression and were able to live, vote and fight in the war with pride. Our grandparents worked in homes, entering by the back door and leaving the same way, fought in the war under conditions that were a disgrace to any nation, but still they fought and the ones that survived were rarely honored if at all. So sorry that you cannot see the issue here, maybe I can put it in a As far as factories, well I do know about how it was here in Fayetteville and for some blacks that was pretty bad. My family did not have the opportunity to whine or they could have been killed or just laughed at. To whine means that you are an equal, and at this very minute I am in so many ways still waiting for that opportunity. Society has watered down, on that I agree with you. The sense of still not being equal is there no matter what your title is. It would appear that one never gets over an inborn fear of losing life or limb by a person of authority. If you speak of entitlement, you have to first speak of equal measures. After all, how many white males were pulled over compared to the Of course this is what you might see in your inbox, but not from me. I am a 26-year-old single father of a 6-year-old girl that I have been raising since she was 3-weeks-old. I have a job and go to school, while trying to venture into my own small business. It gets hard, but I never complain and take on the challenge. The reward of succeeding, no matter the size, makes it worth it. more, but instead of worrying and whining about the things I deserve, I work for the things I feel I may deserve. I feel like I have an old soul, and maybe, just maybe, a soul from the "Great Generation". It makes me sick to see people blame other people so quickly and feel they should be treated like royalty without putting in any effort to better themselves first. It just makes me feel good that I am raising my daughter the same way my mother raised me. The thing is, it's not that hard! I could give up and holler that nothing is fair in life and that I deserve number of black, and to be truthful how many black friends do you have that could tell you the truth about what goes on around here; and are you willing to believe them? Blowing smoke is how our past generations have survived and provided for their families, you can not provide if you are badly beaten or dead. Even though the kids grew up and went to college the sense of not being equal was and is still there and in so many ways passed down to their children, who in turn pass it down to theirs. Very few of us speak up and take a real stand for a cause we believe in — and even fewer go against the man when he pulls us over and asks to see our license and registration. Please do not think for one minute that they do not know it. Racial incidents happen every day here in Fayetteville, and if you were just brave enough to ask someone black you would know that. Whiners, no ... survivors, yes. And just a little hint, keep your grandfather out of it because then one could wonder about, well you know ... AAA, BBB, CCC, DDD, EEE, FFF, GGG, HHH, III, JJJ, K ... Rethink the race issue and what you call whining. Bunny English Hey Janice, You are clearly a racist and someone that hates to see when people are treated right and fair! I just wanted to say I enjoyed your article and don't worry too much, because there are still people out there with the same old soul. I appreciate your article and the ones that live by it. Thanks! Ruben Janice, It's easy to smile, give and receive respect and to have plenty of manners. Just sprinkle in the teaching of financial responsibility, never quitting and working hard and BAM! you have a productive citizen with the mind set and skills to move towards a life that they will enjoy while helping others. I totally agree with you on your article. I was born and raised on a farm and I am not too happy with this generation. It seems to be everyone else's fault for what went wrong with anything in life. I do wish for the good old days. Thanks for your article. Julie Robinson Janice, After reading your article 'The Not So Great Generation' I feel I have to drop you a line to say reading it was like listening to my parents and grandparents view on things specifically and in-general. I came along after the Great Depression. My birth date is early 1943 ... the early days of World War II, another tough time for our predecessors. So, I enjoyed your article, and find it to be 'spot on' in every regard. You must have good mentors, as did I. Johnny Fermanides We're ONLINE!
