CUMBERLAND Cumberland County Public Library's Bordeaux Branch is launching a new monthly "Deaf Chat" program on Saturday, June 18, at 12 p.m. for the hard-of-hearing and deaf community, as well as interested citizens. On July 16, "Deaf Chat" will host David Rico, a Methodist University campus police officer, who will discuss his work and experience in learning sign language. Program for Deaf Community At Library Cumberland County Emergency Management Coordinator Gene Booth graduated from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's National Emergency Management Advanced Academy in May. Booth completed the full curriculum that provides the strategic level training and education and the essential skills needed for professionals to manage emergency management programs. The academy was held at the Emergency Management Institute in Emittsburd, Md. Coordinator Completes Management Academy Youth ages 5 to 19 are invited to participate in Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development's 2016 Summer Adventures summer program. Participants must enroll in 4-H membership to participate. Extension Offers 4-H Youth Summer Adventures Cumberland County Emergency Management Coordinator Gene Booth, left, is congratulated by Emergency Management Institute Superintendent Tony Russell at the FEMA National Emergency Management Advanced Academy graduation. A collaborative partnership between the public health departments of Cumberland, Hoke, Montgomery and Richmond counties has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to fund implementation of evidence-based strategies proven to lower infant mortality, improve birth outcomes, and improve the overall health of children from birth to age 5. The four-county partnership will receive $500,000 each year from June 2016 through May 2019. Strategies to meet the outcomes include Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the Long Active Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs) program and the Clinical Effort Against Secondhand Smoke Exposure (CEASE) program.
