JUNE 15-21, 2016 UCW 21 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Don't be just another face in the crowd. We can help your business get noticed. UP & COMING WEEKLY 910.484.6200 ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Melody Foote Director of Communications Fayetteville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau Liberty Point Bulletin One of the ways the Faye eville Area Conven on and Visitors Bureau (FACVB) works to posi on Cumberland County as a des na on for mee ngs, tournaments and individual travel is to secure posi ve publicity for the community in travel and trade publica ons. We aim to expose travelers and mee ng and tournament planners to why Cumberland County is the perfect des na on for their mee ng or event. The FACVB is the only agency in Cumberland County that ac vely works to secure regional, state and na onal publicity for Cumberland County's tourism assets. How do we manage this effort? The coverage is achieved in many ways. As the Director of Communica ons, I work directly with the media on these endeavors: >Distribute press releases on events, developments and new products available in Cumberland County. These releases are distributed na onwide to appropriate media, including bloggers and social media sites. > A ending media marketplaces in North Celebrating July 4th Carolina and other regions. At these events, I present the a endees with a story "pitch" sheet with story ideas for Cumberland County. These story ideas are rou nely updated with new newsworthy des na on informa on and developments. With follow up I build rela onships with a endees and secure visits and stories. > Invi ng writers to visit and explore the community. The bureau typically brings in 6 – 8 writers each year. This year, the number was higher. In late April, the Society of American Travel Writers visited Raleigh for their Eastern Chapter mee ng. Thanks to local partnerships, the bureau hosted five journalists for three days. Three stories are pending from this visit, including one with an es mated adver sing value of $40,000. > Hos ng writer events. In 2012, the bureau hosted the Midwest Travel Writers for their Spring 2012 mee ng. Forty writers from the Midwest a ended the event. More than 20 stories were wri en from this visit – and we are s ll seeing placements. In the last decade, the bureau also hosted Travel Media Showcase, which brought over 100 journalists from around the United States and Canada to Cumberland County. If you would like more informa on on how the FACVB works with the travel and trade media; or if you have an idea for a story, please contact me at mfoote@ visi aye evillenc.com or by phone at 910- 483-5311.
