By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor They've been stars on the sports pages, but they have the potential to be stars on the front page as well. Eighteen Red Bluff Spartans recently received the Eastern Athletic League Senior Scholar Athlete Award for students with a minimum 3.5 GPA, who play at least one sport. Two of them, Alana Hinkston and Garrett Span- gler, also received regional awards for their ability to be both parts of the term stu- dent-athlete. Spangler also found time to be president of the Entre- preneur Club and the Red Bluff High Go Green Club, the latter of which he was a founder. "Not playing a sport Despite her many wasn't an option," said Hinkston, who highlighted the teamwork and ability to Spangler stay in shape as two of her favorite aspects of sports. "A lot of all-nighters, but Ihave a really supportive family," she said. Hinkston said she plans to attend Santa Clara Uni- versity and study business —either administration or marketing. Spangler was a captain of the football team and also ran track, while he held down a 4.192 GPA. Spangler plans on attending Menlo College to study business and play football in the fall. "It was kind of a big honor to have people I look up to in the community rec- ognize my accomplish- ments," Spangler said of his award. — Francisco Liriano needed a strong start in his return to the Minnesota Twins rota- tion. ''You've got to give cred- it to a guy that pitches well and puts up the numbers that he did, but he was also 0-5 with an 8 ERA,'' Melvin said. Manager Bob Melvin A's slump worsens; swept by Minnesota MINNEAPOLIS (AP) 1B Thursday May 31, 2012 Figgs, Ramirez in All-Star game BASEBALL Red Bluff's Taylor Figgs and Modesto Ramirez are set to play in Sunday's 10th annual Chico Breakfast Lions Bob Busch Classic high school all-star baseball game. The game is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. at Chico's Doryland Field. Figgs and Ramirez will join the North All-Stars coached by Central Val- ley's Bob Anderson. The rest of the team fea- tures: Blake Adkins (West Valley), Richard Adsouri- an (Liberty Christian), Jared Bertotti (Lassen), Austin Coleman (Foothill)m Brandon Erickson (Foothill), Gar- rett Greenhaw (Anderson), Kaleb Hogue (Enterprise), Everett Johnson (Central Valley), Andy Lauritzen (Shasta), Josh Lee (Yreka), Jake Mekeel (Dunsmuir), Dylan Mum- ford (West Valley), Kodiak O'Ravez (Enterprise), Colby Rimmer (Etna), Tanner Schaefer (Etna) and Tucker Wilson (Foothill). Anderson's coaching assistants are Kevin Strohmeyer, Don Hodson, Chris Freibel and Rob Berliner from his Central Valley staff along with Jason Freitas (Yreka), Paul Vietti (West Valley), and Collin Krueger (Etna). The North includes players from Red Bluff to the Oregon border, leads the series 5-3 with Ander- son posting three of the wins. The south features play- ers from south of Red Bluff to the Yuba City- Marysville area. Fletcher, Rodriguez on North All-Stars SOFTBALL Red Bluff's Brittney Fletcher and Krista Rodriguez will take to the diamond, Saturday, in the 7th annual George Hib- don Classic high school all-star softball game. The game set for 6 p.m. at Hooker Oak Recreation Area is orga- nized by the Chico Breakfast Lions Club. The softball game is played in memory of a Lions charter member and past president, George Hibdon, who was a Chico school principal for many years. He died in 2009. The South leads the series 4-1. Last year's game was rained out. A major portion of proceeds will be donated to the Lions District 4C-1 sum- mer camp program for diabetic children. The North will be coached by Mt. Shasta's Joe Spini. MCTphoto The Twins'Ben Revere slides by Jemile Weeks for a stolen base,Wednesday. Liriano (1-5) retired the last 11 batters he faced and struck out nine, the most this season by any Twins pitcher, while lowering his season ERA to a still-ugly 7.20. He allowed only two walks with a double and two singles against the worst-hitting team in the majors that's now batting .210. Would lineup changes help? The manager said he thinks he's already done what he can with that. Are the hitters passively waiting for Yoenis Cespedes to return from the disabled list and Manny Ramirez to join the team for the first time? ''I'm certainly not look- ing. I haven't the whole year. If that's what we're doing in there, then that's my fault. I certainly hope that's not the case,'' Melvin said. Ramirez's 50-game drug suspension expired Wednes- day but was still with Triple- A Sacramento. Cespedes is expected to join the A's Fri- day in Kansas City after completing his rehab assign- ment for a strained muscle in his left hand. Josh Willingham had an RBI single and a two-run homer against his previous team, roughly 15 hours after his three-run shot in the ninth gave the Twins a dra- matic win the night before. This was their first sweep of both a home series and a three-game set this season. ''We just lose a little bit of our fight sometimes when things go in the other direc- tion early on, and that's not the way we've been,'' Melvin said. Starter Tyson Ross (2-6) lasted only five innings for the A's, who are batting .172 during this losing streak. Ten times in their last 15 games, they've scored two runs or fewer. ''It was a poor outing. My command wasn't great at all. I fell behind hitters, and that's kind of what hap- pens,'' Ross said. ''I'll keep grinding it out and just find a solution.'' The right-hander was in trouble right away with a leadoff double by Denard Span. Joe Mauer walked, and Willingham followed with a sharp single. Brian Dozier drove in another run with a single of his own. After Mauer walked for the third time, in the fifth inning, Willingham hit a no- doubter to the back of the second deck above left field for his 10th home run this year. Liriano's first six starts were so bad he was put in the bullpen to fix his mind and his mechanics, and his last relief appearance Friday was rough, too — five hits, four runs and two walks in 2 2-3 innings. For at least one afternoon, Liriano offered some hope. The North team fea- tures players from schools located from Red Bluff to the Oregon bor- der. Joining Fletcher and Rodriguez on the North roster are: Haley Brown (Mt. Shasta), Tessa Bur- rone (Etna), Telese Dowdy (Modoc), Hannah Dykstra (Anderson), Monicah Eppler (Modoc), Dominique Foster (Weed), Rudy Fos- ter (Anderson), Cheridan Hawkins (Anderson), Heather Jacop (Central Valley), Cheyenne King (Modoc), Mandy Lakey (Fall River), Amanda Lynn (Lassen), Kayla Spini (Mt. Shasta), Ally Wimer (Foothill) and Natalie Yonan (Lassen).
