Her many drawings and paintings reflect the rural western lifestyle that she has grown to love. Marly sets high goals for herself and continually ensures that completion occurs. This young lady has contributed countless hours to the "Arts Celebration" week for K-8th graders and to the Northern California Arts Forum. She is always well prepared and her presentations demonstrate knowledge of her craft and her writing ability in the arts. She is a teacher assistant in the high school Art History class. In Art History she researches relevant information needed for the class and presents lessons on her discoveries. Marly's goals include a career in writing and graphic design with an emphasis in the production and writing of children's' books! Sponsored By: Middle School Maywood Matt Mekech 8th Grade Matt Mekech is an 8th grader at Los Molinos Elementary School who is wrapping up an outstanding 8th grade year. While he has always been a good student, he has taken initiative in a few projects that have impressed students, the staff, and even our Board of Trustees. He is highly interested in technology and has used those skills in his work. The distinction that sets Matt apart is the drive to go above and beyond what is expected at school. He has brought some of his initiative into AVID class. After reading a story about a football player who lives in a gang-infested area of Los Angeles, Matt made contact with the student. He also proposed an initiative to his AVID teacher, Mr. Sutter, to join in the Invisible Children Project that helps build schools in war-ravaged Central Africa. This included joining in the nation-wide advertising campaign of finding Joseph Kony, a leader who is responsible for the enslavement of over 30,000 children to fight in his army. The entire AVID class "blanketed" downtown Los Molinos with flyers in coordination with thousands of others around the nation on April 20. Sponsored By: Vista Middle School Meagan Carpenter Meagan Carpenter has set herself apart from other students in the Woodshop program. Meagan has made herself into a strong, skilled woodworker through her patience and attention to detail. The quality of her work is evident through the many quality projects she has completed during her three years in the Woodshop. She has made a multi-wood chest of drawers that she designed and crafted, and is currently working on a hope chest, in addition to other smaller projects. Meagan is a talented woodworker and a quality person who understands responsibility and who always help me or a fellow classmate. She is truly a distinctive young lady with a good set of values and a promising future. She is an excellent student and has made Honor Roll and Principal's Honor Roll many times. She is a great athlete, and has played basketball for our girls' teams. Megan is a member of Club Live and has helped with Red Ribbon week and Mini- Olympics. She has been regularly involved in community service and helped with the Calico Fair and our Relay for Life team. In her spare time Megan loves to read and do photography. In the future she plans to attend college and study to be a professional photographer. Milah joined the Kirkwood family as a shy 6th grader and has grown into an incredibly kind and outgoing young lady. Milah has played volleyball, basketball, and softball for Kirkwood. She has been active in student council and has maintained a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the past three years. Milah is always willing to go the extra mile to help fellow students and staff members and is an excellent role model for the younger students on campus. She loves meeting new people and making friends wherever she goes. Although the Kirkwood community will miss Milah, we know that she will succeed during her years at Corning High School and beyond. Mirella is a gifted student, earning a 3.54 G.P.A. throughout her two years at Vista Middle School. She has a great sense of humor with a high intellect, quick wit, and always has a smile on her face with a laugh that won't stop. Mirella is a gifted musician and has played the clarinet since 5th grade. She recently auditioned and was accepted to the California Music Educator's Association -Northern Section Junior High Honor Band at California State University, Chico this past January. In her spare time, Mirella likes to play many sports: volleyball, basketball, soccer, and softball. After high school, Mirella would like to play volleyball for UC Berkeley or UC Davis and possibly pursue a career in firefighting or veterinary sciences. Nicholas Ornelas 8th Grade "Men acquire a particular quality by constantly acting in a particular Way". - Aristotle When describing the qualities of Nick Ornelas, an 8th grade student at Vista Middle School, words such as polite, responsible, honorable, friendly, respectful, athletic and a gentleman are continually used because he continually practices these qualities. Nick volunteers his time as a successful peer tutor in Algebra where he demonstrates a high level of helpfulness and patience and is consistently a positive influence on everyone around him. Nick holds a 3.95 GPA at Vista while participating in many extra curricular activities. He is the point guard on the Vista basketball team where he has earned several all-tournament selections over the 2 years. Nicholas is also the starting center midfielder on the Vista soccer team. Outside of school, Nick plays on a Division 3 competitive soccer team, an AAU basketball team and was given the opportunity to participate on the 2011 Olympic Developmental Soccer Team, as the only team member playing from the North state. He volunteers daily assisting in a special needs recycling program. He helps students navigate their way around campus collecting recyclables. Roman's mentor and teacher in this career education program is thoroughly impressed with his leadership skills, but more importantly with his ability to show patience and kindness to students who need to be guided by someone with those attributes. Roman performs his duties with a professional attitude and has become an excellent role model not only for the students in the classroom, but for the adults and educators, as well.
